Mary Elizabeth Winstead really has been everywhere lately, doing one red carpet event after another and looking fantastic in her own unique way. Anyone else feel like Mary got robbed for an Oscar nom this year for her performance in SMASHED? She did such a fantastic job in the role of the recovering alcoholic and also a real surprise for someone who hasn't had a big string of impressive roles. That's probably more of that Academy favoritism bullshit. They always go for the same damn people every time. Not to say that this year's noms didn't deserve it, but isn't it a little suspect that the same names keep coming up year after year? Clearly it all comes down to lobbying. Producers and studios and even the actors themselves literally bombard every available media and insider resource in an attempt to draw attention to their movie. The Weinstein Company was particularly ruthless this year with their lobbying for THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. I would think that kind of lobbying onslaught would crowd out a lot of deserving actors and productions that otherwise might have come to the attention of Academy voters. I suppose the sheer number of movies coming out every year makes it impossible for everything to come to the Academy's attention. Still, it's not fair how much good stuff gets overlooked. Good stuff like Mary. What can you do?
