Whether or not you're fans of Natalie Portman
and her new set of blonde locks, she's busy putting them to work, reporting to the set of the as-yet-untitled Terrance Malick movie being filmed in Austin, Texas. I like Portman fine enough, to the point where she's a rather benign presence in movies for me these days. When she was younger, as a child star, I was far more interested to see what she was going to do next and still consider her best performances to be in LEON and BEAUTIFUL GIRLS. (Yes, I know I should probably add GARDEN STATE in there, lest be pelted to death with fanboy insults, but eh...) I'm also concerned with the fact that Terrence hasn't directed a movie that I found to be as praise-worthy as most people slather on him since 1973's BADLANDS. While I can process Portman's popularity and even feel confident that she'll continue to grow and become more interesting as an actress in her later years (I can't wait until she's rockin' the mom & grandmom roles), Malick is just.... I don't have the right words. I could paraphrase my friend Thom who calls Malick a "hack," but that wouldn't be my opinion. Just the passed along one of a film fan who has a much more in depth position on Malick's (lack of?) talent.
