There's this story that director Penelope Spheeris told once, she of the brilliant and utterly underappreciated documentary DECLINE OF THE WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART TWO: THE METAL YEARS (what can I say? I loved the decadence of the hair metal era), and it involved Pink, Janis Joplin and some begging. I guess back when they were still throwing around the idea of making a movie about the ill-fated singer's life, Alecia Moore crawled across Spheeris' desk and demanded that she cast her in the role. At some point Pink had to drop out or the funding for the project dried up. For whatever reason, that image always has stuck out to me.
Now Pink is applying her charms to promoting her new album, Funhouse, a disc that I am unashamed to admit that I bought on the day that it was released. Don't let the title fool you, it's anything but and it's much more than the current Top 40 hit from it, "So What?" Sure, Pink's pop, but there's something about her lyrics that when you listen closer, you can sense that desk crawling chick is still under her skin.
