I kind of regret missing out on the days of the Playboy clubs and the bunny waitresses. Sure, I know some thought it was degrading and sexist, but the job itself couldn't have been any worse than Hooters. I'm pretty sure it was the drunken businessmen fondling hotties in bunny outfits during their liquid lunches that did those places in. One more area where rich white guys completely f*cked it all up for future generations. Anyway, Playboy brought the bunnies out of retirement for an afternoon to celebrate her 60th anniversary the other day, squeezing a selection of 60 bunnies in all shapes and sizes to do a big group photo session for the occasion. The one in black there is Jayde Nicole, their 2008 Playmate of the Year, who apparently was the main event for this thing.
I guess it's a great milestone and everything for them, but it definitely seems to me like Playboy, much like the rest of the periodical business, is in dinosaur territory now. In a world where any kind of porn imaginable is only a mouse click away, is anybody really willing to spend money for a few shots of overly Photoshopped women interspersed between endless articles about shit no one cares about? At this point, Playboy's only real value is its ability to give celebs on their way down the ladder of success the hope that getting naked might halt their decline for a minute. The rest is mostly nostalgia and Hugh Hefner's dogged determination to ride his ancient concept into the ground like Slim Pickens rode that nuke at the end of STRANGELOVE. As fond as I am of the good old days, it's still way past time for them to pack it up and move on.
