There have been various rumors, casting "ideals" and fights to the death surrounding the US remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander. One of them was Rooney Mara (sister of Kate Mara) who we last saw being chased by Jackie Earl Haley's Freddy in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST., Sony Pictures just confirmed Mara will indeed be taking on the role of Lisbeth alongside Daniel Craig in the first chapter (and its possible two sequels) of "The Millennium Trilogy" the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster under the direction of David Fincher.
A lot of names were mentioned for the role, from Natalie Portman to Carey Mulligan and Ellen Page, even Scarlett Johansson was apparently after the role, rumors where far and wide, Emma Watson supposedly cut her hair for an audition, but in the end, Fincher always expressed his desire to not go with any of the A or B listers and thus there was a three-way battle between Rooney Mara, Léa Seydoux & Sophie Lowe that ended up with Rooney as the victor.
Only time will tell if Rooney Mara has the ovaries needed to take on the role, I've only seen her in the remake of ANOES and her portrayal of Nancy could be seen as just boring, of course that doesn't exactly mean it's her fault, the whole remake was boring as shit but it doesn't look like she tried either, all the while the character of Lisbeth from the Millennium books and films is a million times deeper and more rounded. Before she can prove her worth, she will also appear this fall in David Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK aka Facebook: The Movie and until then, I'll be giving Mara the benefit of the doubt.
