There are worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon than waiting for a call from Adrianne Palicki. This is especially true when you have just watched her add a refreshing feminine touch to the testosterone heavy G.I. JOE: RETALIATION (read my review HERE). Don’t get me wrong, she can handle the action just as well as the boys and then some. And this explosive good time at the movies is all the better for having her involved. Yet this is clearly not my first exposure to Palicki. This lovely actress charmed her way into my heart with her terrific work on the hit series “Friday Night Lights” as well as her brief but memorable work on the CW hit series “Supernatural.” What’s not to love?
When she called without a publicist to monitor the conversation (generally phone interviews have a publicist handling the call but not this time), frankly it was a happy surprise. Yet it soon became clear that she is incredibly friendly, open and so very easy to speak to. When we talked, we spoke about her latest feature film and who would win in a fight, Dwayne Johnson or Channing Tatum. We discussed the advantages of keeping out of the limelight and most importantly, that we all need a good hug. We even had a little fun gushing over her former co-star Connie Britton. Yes, we both love the series “Nashville” and we’re not afraid to admit it.
Since I was already a fan of Ms. Palicki before, I found that she was even more incredible to chat with. She is a wonderful actress and an absolutely gorgeous lady with an amazing personality...and of course she is damn terrific as Lady Jaye in RETALIATION. So go check her out along with her co-stars, Willis, Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson in G.I. JOE 2: RETALIATION which is currently playing at a theatre near you. Go Joe!
In G.I. JOE, you are kind of stepping into a “boy’s world,” how was that experience for you?
They were stepping into my world buddy! [Laughing]
I like that attitude.
Absolutely! It was funny because, yes there was a lot of testosterone but after a while you are stuck in these really crazy situations with these guys. You are out in the middle of nowhere, you hear things, you smell things, and you hear stories that you can’t repeat. You just feel like one of the guys.
Who would win in a fight? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or Channing Tatum?
I gotta go with The Rock on that one.
I think you may be right, but I think Channing could out dance him.
I was gonna say, if it was a dance off for sure Channing. Although, you know Dwayne has some moves. He did a couple of [jigs] on set.
How do you like having an action figure? I need to get yours by the way.
Yes, you do actually. It was really awesome. Most actors can’t wait until the day that they get their Oscar or their Emmy or Tony. For me it was always ‘I can’t wait until I get my own action figure’ so it’s kind of like I don’t know where to go from here.
Well, you could get another action figure, like they did back in the days with STAR WARS and the different Princess Leia figures they had.
I like the way you think. Maybe it’s just going to be this huge collection of action figures.
Do you consider yourself a bit of a geek? Are you into STAR WARS, G.I. JOE or are you a romantic comedy kind of girl?
I’m actually both, but definitely a geek for sure. My big brother is a comic book writer and he’s one of my best friends. Of course everything that he did growing up I wanted to do, like playing with G.I. Joe action figures which I used to steal from them. I was totally the girl that would go outside in the backyard with my brother and cousins and play war – but I’d do it in a pink dress. Or I’d play with his G.I. Joes and Ninja Turtles and then with my Barbies.
Are you the kind of person that will go out and have fun or do you prefer to chill at home?
I’m definitely a home body but I do like adventure. I like being on set and being in new locations is really fun. But when I am in Los Angeles, I really do love just winding down, having a glass of wine and watching my favorite TV shows.
What are your favorite shows?
Oh my gosh! So right now I just finished the fourth season of “Breaking Bad.” Everybody told me it was kind of like “Friday Night Lights,” and you have to see it, it’s one of those shows that you have to see. And there were so many seasons that I have to see and I probably watched four seasons within two weeks.
Are you kidding me?
I’m not kidding. It was like crack. I was itching when I was out in daylight. I was like, I need to get home and watch more “Breaking Bad.” There was one time I watched eight episodes in a day.
I love the show to, but you wouldn’t get tired of it?
No, I’d switch it up a bit and watch “Homeland” or something like that.
I’m sort of embarrassed to admit this but because of the whole Connie Britton connection…
She’s one of my best friends.
Oh… I love “Nashville.”
Oh. “Nashville” is one of my favorite shows. I call them my “stories.”
Yes, me too and my wife makes fun of me...
Now since we are talking Connie Britton, who I have a massive crush on…
I know why you have a crush on her, because she is awesome and gorgeous and so talented. That is why she is one of my dearest friends, she is such an awesome human being and she is so funny. She’s incredible.
Did you learn a lot working with her on “Friday Night Lights?”
I think we all learned a lot working with each other, it was a weird thing. There were definitely seasoned actors on that show but for all of us it was an upbringing in a weird sort of way. It was something that none of us had ever done before and we really became a family in every way possible. Between her and Kyle Chandler it was just amazing to watch what they did.
Being involved in shows like that and now G.I. JOE, do you ever Google yourself and see what people are saying?
No. I do not do that. I learned that the hard way. Do not read what people say about you because for every good one there is gonna be three bad ones. You don’t even go there.
I got a little hate for my review of this movie.
Yeah, a couple people complained because I didn’t give enough away plotwise.
Well I think you wrote an awesome review.
Now since this column focuses on the most beautiful women in Hollywood, which you are of course.
Oh, thank you!
You’re welcome! Since we started with Connie Britton, who are some of the most beautiful actresses you’ve ever worked with?
I don’t know, I’ve worked with some really beautiful women for sure. I mean Connie Britton obviously takes the cake on that, but Kate Walsh as well. And there are so many beautiful women in Hollywood that I just love, like Eva Mendes is one of the most beautiful women ever!
And she gives good hugs.
Oh, a good hugger is a keeper.
How are you at giving hugs?
I love hugs, I’m a big hugger. I’m the uncomfortable hugger that will just hug anybody. It’s crazy how you can disarm somebody. Somebody is having a bad day and you give them a hug and it just changes everything. Or they get really creeped out.
Who are some of your favorite actors that you’ve had the chance to work with?
I have to say that D.J. Catrona, who plays Flint in RETALIATION, is one of the best actors that I’ve ever worked with. He can say a line and I wonder how he makes it work. It can be impossible to make it work but he has the capacity to do it. Kyle Chandler is another one. He is one of the best actors. He is amazing. I’d say the entire “Friday Night Lights” cast, I mean I’m completely biased but they are some of the best actors I’ve ever worked with. Bruce Willis! I can’t believe that I got to work with him so tightly and we bonded immediately.
You guys were awesome together by the way.
We had a great friendship. A lot of that banter that you saw on-camera was also off-camera. That was our relationship. That “Brenda” [Willis character refuses to call her character Jaye] was his idea and the minute he said it to me I actually had a [strong] reaction, I was like ‘okay, this is gonna work, this is good for the character because it really upsets me.’ [Laughing]
You have been so busy working lately, but what are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I like to read. I like to read comic books. I obviously like to watch television. I like to hike. I like to walk my dog and do Pilates and hang out with my friends. I’m pretty low key when it comes to my day to day life.
You are my kind of people.
See! We’ve got to get together and watch our stories.
