Fernanda Romero is a beautiful up-and-coming actress soon to be seen in films like MISSION PARK (coming out September 6th via AMC Theaters) and GHOST TEAM ONE (which Paramount Home Media will release later this year in October). The Mexico City-born model/actress achieved early fame thanks to her participation in the youth group “Fryzzby”, and currently produces music with her band “The White Cherries” when she’s not continuing packing on the credits in front of the camera.
It was my pleasure to chat with Ms. Romero (who can also be seen in the horror hits THE EYE and DRAG ME TO HELL) about her current rise to fame. In the process I found out a little about her celebrity loves, her musical past and playing a deadly “hoochie-momma.”
So tell me a little about this film MISSION PARK that you're in.
It's a drama about these four friends. I'm part of a love triangle and become part of a conflict between these friends. I'm the love interest. Everything was amazing about making that film. It's a little indie film, but AMC is putting it out, which I'm really excited about.
It's great to see AMC get behind a small film like this.
It's really important, because it will open doors for other artists to make this kind of film and get a big release and opportunity from a chain like AMC. It could be the start of something really cool, to see the release of these small artistic films in big theaters.
Tell me about your character.
My character has a really cool turn. She's from the ghetto, kind of a hoochie-momma girl, but she loves being around the gangsters. There's a twist because when she starts out, she's all in love, but then you start wondering who is the bad guy. Don't mess with this girl, because she will kill you.
Are you a fan of action movies and crime dramas?
I am, I love SCARFACE and those mafia movies. I actually want to do more action.
What is your all time favorite movie?
I love Woody Allen's films, I think he is amazing. I love LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. It's one of those films I can re-watch over and over again. GARDEN STATE I really like. I usually like the smaller films. I love Almodovar, his characters are so well developed. Woody Allen and Almodovar are my two favorite directors. I'm so obsessed with them.
Is there an actor or actress that you would really want to work with?
Penelope Cruz. She's not just pretty, she has substance. It takes some guts to do what she does, playing all these crazy characters throughout her career. And she's a chameleon, and she's still evolving. As for American actresses, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel, I just absolutely love her.
You were in a music group some years back, right? ("Frizzby") What was that like?
Was awesome, but everything comes to an end. You have to continue your career. It's really hard, especially as a young girl, to maintain your life. Being a musician is a harder life because of all the travel; yes, you travel as an actress, but when you're in a band it's really crazy.
How do you spend your downtime?
Music. That's my getaway, it's fun. It's a great way to express yourself, it's like a diary. I have a band right now, The White Cherries. I also like spending time with my dog, or traveling. I came back from Italy and Greece recently which was amazing!
What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?
I think Santorini in Greece. It’s so beautiful. It’s just like a painting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so beautiful. Also Thailand, which is one of my favorite places.
What else do you have coming up?
I’m currently working on a show for Sofia Vergara’s Youtube channel. It’s called “Chamacas”. It’s just a group of girls and we do all of these fun sketches. It just started to get a following. I want to do more comedy; I love drama, but I love doing comedy.
Thanks for a great chat, Fernanda! Looking forward to seeing more of you in the future.
