Carrie Keagan is currently hosting the third successful year of her daily morning talk show on VH1, "Big Morning Buzz Live with Carrie Keagan," which covers everything from mainstream headlines to under-the-radar discoveries in film, music, fashion, television and the Web, featuring a wide array of celebrity guests, live music performances, expert insiders and tastemakers of the moment. Having made a name for herself with the web series "No Good TV" and appeared on Attack of the Show, The Talk, and Chelsea Lately Keagan has become one of the most sought-after television personalities of her generation.
She's also one of those fabled "cool chicks" that you only think exist in fiction. She's beautiful, funny, well-versed in movies and television, and it was my extreme pleasure to steal her away from her busy schedule to chat a little bit about her morning show, her time spent at the Super Bowl and her preference for New York over L.A.
Oh, she also talks about potentially jello-wrestling with Kelly Ripa, how much she loves Sylvester Stallone and which actresses she thinks are the hottest. Yeah, this is our kind of woman right here.
"Those are the girls I'm attracted to, the ones you want to drink with."
Some congrats are in order before we get started, your show Big Morning Buzz Live was just renewed over at VH1. That's got to be fairly awesome, right?
It's way awesome, and I got my name on the show! It's surreal every time I see the logo.
You started off as an online personality right, and worked your way up?
Yeah, I founded No Good TV, that was my baby, and we got some nice success out of that between the YouTube channel and NGTV.com, we've got over a billion views now. It was super fun and it launched my career. I found out VH1 was doing a morning show and I ran to them and said, Me me me, pick me! And they picked me to do it and it's been two awesome years of shooting in Times Square, doing a live show every day and I couldn't ask for a cooler career and life.
You must spend a lot of time in NY and LA, which do you prefer? Keep in mind I'm a lifelong New Yorker.
I loved living in LA, but now that I live in New York, I couldn't be happier here, and I understand why people are so extreme in their love and hate for both cities, they're both so very different. When I'm here, I don't live the same way I do when I'm in Los Angeles. You're in your car all the time, you're in a building all the time. When I'm in New York, I'm out. I eat way too much, but I walk everywhere and I love taking the subway. Especially when my poster is on the subway!
Do you ever stand next to your poster and wait for people to recognize you?
(Laughs) I have not done that yet, but I did walk by a bus stop with my picture on it, but there was no one around.
One of Morning Buzz's taglines is "the morning show for people who hate morning shows" - can you elaborate?
I don't familiarize at all with the morning shows that are on TV right now. I like them, I watch them, but they're not talking to me, they're talking to my parents. We really wanted to make a show for people our age, for people who would understand what we're saying: we're mega-fans of a lot of TV shows, we're ridiculously into music, and we go to movies as often as we can. And those are all things that our audience is more into, they're not my parents! It's a pop culture show, so whatever is trending right now, that's what we're talking about.
You were at the Super Bowl last week, what were you up to there?
Debauchery! It was in New Orleans, there's nothing you can do but get into trouble.
What kind of trouble did you get into?
Not only did we get the perfect time to go because it was the Super Bowl, but it was also Mardi Gras, so the city was just bumping with drunks and ridiculous, naked people. And of course the best music you could ever hear just a few blocks down from the ridiculousness on Bourbon Street. We ate too much and drank constantly. The city is so rich in history and beauty, I just fell in love with it. I had never been to a Super Bowl before, I watched the entire game, I tried to understand as much as I could, it was fun, I had a blast.
Were you there to interview players or just people on the street?
Just the people. We were outside shooting some stuff for the Buzz right on this balcony, and the people started filtering out from the game and we started screaming down to all the fans. Unfortunately, the people who were coming out of the stadium at that point were 49ers fans, and they were not very happy. So we're yelling off the balcony and being all excited and they're just looking up at us like we're assholes. (Laughs) I had hosted a Super Bowl concert with Michael Strahan, and Train played, and it was funny because I had to find out who was a Ravens fan and who was a 49ers fan, and whenever I mentioned the Ravens, I got booed. It turned out it was because Train is from San Francisco, so everybody there were 49ers fans.
Well, football fans can be intimidating if they're a little buzzed.
Ain't that the truth. And by the way, Michael Strahan is one of the nicest people I've ever met.
I wonder if Kelly Ripa got a little jealous about that.
Oh god, I hope not. I'm not trying to steal her man! Am I going to start getting death threats from Kelly Ripa?
That would be awesome, I'd be proud of that if I were you.
Know what we could do? I'll bring her on the Buzz and we can have a jello-wreslting match.
Now you're talking! Since you also cover a lot of award shows and stuff, are you looking forward to the Oscars? We have a big Oscar pool at the site every year, do you have any Oscar picks you want to share?
Well, I was really surprised when Ben Affleck didn't get nominated, but ARGO has been kicking ass, so I wouldn't be surprised if that wins the Oscar at this point. I think Anne Hathaway will probably win Best Supporting Actress, she's been sweeping the other awards, and Hugh Jackman will win Best Actor. He knows how to work the room, and the Oscars are a little more about the "insiders" - but he's a very talented man, and he just kicked ass in that movie.
You have a lot of big celebrity guests on your show, who is the coolest actor or actress that you've interviewed - flat-out coolest?
Sylvester Stallone! I had him on my show the other day, I absolutely love him, he is the coolest. He's got the best stories, and I've been the biggest fan forever: ROCKY, FIRST BLOOD, OSCAR, I love Stallone, just getting him on my show was the greatest thing ever.
Who is the hottest?
That's a tough one. Malin Akerman, she is the most feminine woman ever, I just love her. Not only is she incredibly hot, she's one of the coolest chicks on the planet. Emma Stone is one of my favorites, she's gorgeous and she's funny and normal; you just want to hang out and have a beer with her. Those are the girls I'm attracted to, the ones you want to drink with. Let's see... Carla Gugino, Jessica Chastain.
Oh, Jessica is literally the nicest person I've ever met.
Right? And she's gorgeous and she's a redhead, who doesn't love a redhead.
So what have you got coming up, who will you be interviewing next?
Oh, let's see. Emmy Rossum is coming up, I love her, she's also hot. Oh! Jai Courtney will be on, from the new DIE HARD movie. I haven't seen that movie yet. Are you a fan of DIE HARD?
Right? For me, they're along the same lines as any of the Rambo movies or any of the Rocky movies; your perfect action movies.
That seems a perfect way to end this interview, because what better way to remind you that Carrie is one of the coolest chicks on the planet? For more on the awesome Carrie Keagan, visit her website CarrieKeagan.com or follow her on Twitter along with 140,000 others @CarrieKeagan.
