There was a time that I idolized the weird wonder that was 1980's Madonna. Back then, it seemed as if there were only a handful of celebrity musicians who were each doing their own thing. She was most definitely one of them. At the time, if you wanted a more classy/clean singer, you went with Whitney Houston. So cute back in those days. We still thought George Michael was straight, even if he looked gay enough shaking his ass next to that jukebox. Prince? Yeah, that was our crazy man.
I'm naming a lot of the pop people because I've been seeing that there's nothing but a glut of these pop people in this digital, downloading age. Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Nikki Minaj, Ke$ha, P!nk, Taylor Swift... they're all about the same thing. Generally attractive, doing duos and hooking up with the same producers. None of them make the impact that Madonna did. So many to choose from now and yet, I will default to playing Beastie Boys (rap), Motley Crue (hair metal), Megadeth (heavy metal), Madonna (pop), Prince (cute little black guy who made adults uncomfortable with his assless pants and stage gyrations) and Jane's Addiction (cult fave). To remember what made me all atwitter when I was growing up, I thought we could revisit Madonna, pre-beef-jerky arms.
