Is it good movie?
Anthony Falcon seems to me to be a very hard working and determined guy. He did just about everything in 99 Pieces, from editing, directing, starring in it, hell, the guy even created the puzzle system that the film uses. Does that mean that the film is good? No, but it sure does show that a lot of work went into making the film.
99 Pieces is a very well made film, I've got no problems telling you. Is it for everyone? Not exactly, but it is indeed an intellectual piece of work that is tense and realistic at the same time. In fact, I'd have to go out and say I was completely surprised on nealy every level. I mean, the plot is brilliant stuff, and never lets up.
The whole idea that a man can be pushed to his limits is really explored in 99 Pieces. You'll find out all about how an ordinary man and his ordinary life can be turned completely upside down. I suppose that it is easy to compare this film to something like Saw, but really, the plot is much smarter than Saw and far more believable.
The puzzle system and the way that Josh is forced to live is ingenius. Bits and pieces are revealed throughout the film through non-linear flashbacks, and Josh is forced to live on a system of points that drives him insane. There are plenty of twists and turns in the film as well, lots of infidelities, and people double and triple crossing each other- no one is safe. There are scenes within this film that are gut-wrecnhing and heartbreaking. Many points where characters are on the verge of something important but fall short will have you feeling their pain. Watching their selfish indiscretions will have you angry. Finally, seeing the depths hunger can drive a man to will shock you.
99 Pieces is unlike many other films in that it has a big brain in its head. Although it is shot on a low budget on DV film, the acting is great, and the film still attempts to be as stylish as possible. It is absolutely worth checking out, and i'll bet you can't predict what'll happen. Just make sure you've brought your brain with you, cause you'll need to pay attention. In this movie, details count.
Video / Audio
If I had to compare this movie to anything, i'd have to say it is almost like a cross between Saw and The Machinist. 99 Pieces is a character-driven, complex psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. What are you waiting for? Pick up the pieces as quickly as you can.
