What's it about
A well-endowed porn star who's down on his luck is offered a strange opportunity to star in a new film. He doesn't know what it's about, just that it's very "avant-garde" and unlike anything he's ever done before. Not surprisingly, it doesn't end up anything like he expected it to be- child porn, bestiality, incest and lots of bloody rape ensue.
Is it good movie?
I had heard a fair amount about A Serbian Film before I watched it. I heard that I'd never be able to get through it, that it's nasty beyond all repair and just about unwatchable. I don't seek out the horrible, nasty stuff, but to be honest, I don't mind watching it. I recently watched The Human Centipede 2 and it absolutely disgusted me, and in comparison I'd watch this film again before I watched HC2. I think that it's simply a matter of liking films that can provoke a real reaction from me. I know that I question myself, asking if something like this is what I need to consider myself entertained these days and it isn't' a matter of needing to be entertained, but rather a desire to not see some stupid girl running around, falling over and getting killed by a guy in a mask. This is not to say that I don't like slashers- I just like things that can be different from time to time, something that pushes the limits and makes you think.

Before I talk about the plot, I'd just like to mention that this is a cool looking movie. It's shot very atmospherically, and the style of filmmaking was slick and crisp. I also think that Srdjan Todorovic (Milos) deserves a lot of props- this is a ballsy performance that not many actors could pull off. Wow.

A Serbian Film might not make you think long and hard, but it's going to get your attention. I can't tell you that it's great or horrible because if you dare, you need to watch it yourself. The film does ramp up nicely though, and is more of an actual film than I thought. It eases you in slowly and helps you to care a bit for Milos, our porn star who's just trying to make enough to get out of the business. We're introduced to his wife and young son, who he obviously loves and has a good (albeit somewhat odd) relationship with.

On the flip side, we slowly learn more and more about the bizarre director, Vukmir as the film progresses- he loves Milos' work (and his appendage) and really sells the poor guy hard on the film.  Milos agrees to make the film although he is quite skeptical about it, even the audience doesn't know what they're getting into when the shit hits the fan.

And I'm not going to talk about the horrible, horrible things that happen within the film. I realize that this ignores a good half of the movie, but if you want to see this film, you need to see it without explicit descriptions. Let's just say this- there's a lot of blood, a lot of death, a lot of rape, a lot of drugs, allusions to sex with children, betrayal, incest and a lot of horrible, horrible violence.

The thing is, the audience has no idea when the shooting of the film begins and ends. Sometimes, the things that Milos does are things he's totally aware of as being a part of the film, while others are simply hazy recollections that come to us in flashback form.

I can't accurately describe how awful and nasty (and I admit, at times, funny) this film is. The last half hour or so of this film is heartbreaking, demented and awful. If you think that you're the person who never gets affected by anything (or you're one of those idiots who just tells your friends that nothing gets to you because you're so cool), this one is sure to show you something you'll wish you hadn't seen. A Serbian Film mines the depths of depravity, sadness, anger and horror and doesn't really shy away from anything. This film certainly serves a purpose and is well made, whether or not you decide you're up to the challenge of seeing it is up to you.

You certainly can't un-watch it.
Video / Audio
This film comes to us in  2.40:1 1080p widescreen and looks fantastic, in my opinion. Real reference quality stuff, nice and sharp.

Audio comes in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and sounds just fine, even if the mix isn't that exciting.

There's a digital copy, if you want to watch this again..on the go. In public somewhere.

Last Call
I'd like to suggest some real viewer discretion here. This isn't just another stupid horror film, it's a serious, nasty, horrific watch that isn't pleasant and doesn't bode well for lovers of happy endings. I think it's well made and hard to turn away from, I'm going to rate it well. With that said, if you think it deserves no stars, I know exactly where you're coming from.
