What's it about
A theater group has an initiation party for the incoming freshman at Baxter University. During the initiation, a girl O.D.'s on a date rape drug and dies, leaving the group's 'leader' and his buddies to hide the body and pretend nothing happened. All seems well and over with, until the next evening of rehearsals, where folks in the theater group are killed one by one.
Is it good movie?
For a low budget slasher flick, ACTS OF DEATH surprisingly hit all the marks of being up there with the classics. It features a cast of good looking college students (and well developed, too!), a variety of would be killers to keep the guessing game intense until the very end, a touch of nudity, and plenty of awesome kills filled with enough blood and guts to do even PROM NIGHT proud (re: the body count was high and I appreciated it). With all these great aspects, how could this flick go wrong, right? One word: pacing.

The biggest element that hurt DEATH and dropped it from being an awesome slasher flick is the film's overall pacing. It was just too slow, with the too much time in-between kills to keep things exciting. Couple that with the music lacking the kind of intensity that propels the 'chase' or 'kill' sequence to the next level, and you get a slow moving slasher flick that just doesn't fit with this type of movie. I could understand if it featured a slow build up to an eventual climatic ending (much like the works of the great John Carpenter), but in the end, it was just slow through the end, and while that may work for some people, it just didn't work for me. There could have been about 10-15 minutes cut out, and I would've been a much happier camper.

As far as performances go, they were actually bit better than you'd expect, considering the budget. Reggie Bannister did an 'ok' job, but didn't really excel or stand out above anyone else. The main kid reminded me of the winner of the last Ryan Reynolds look-a-like contest. For playing the main character, the guy was an a-hole and I rooted for him and the rest of the motley crew to die the deaths they so deserved.

And finally, this may seem like a petty thing to point out, but I have to do it: the revelation of the killer's motive was weak. Not just weak, but really only justified the kill of just one person, and not the whole group. This may sound weird, but based on the explanation, it felt out of character for the body count to be as high as it was considering the 'whys' behind the massacre. I know, it's a just a slasher movie, but come on... the reality created here in this movie should at least be consistent!

Video / Audio
Video: Presented in 16x9 Widescreen. Looked pretty good for an independent feature.

Audio: 2.0 Dolby Stereo. It didn't need anything more than this.

The Extras
Trailers: A few trailers for some upcoming Lionsgate releases, including GRIM REAPER, and red-band trailers for HAUNTED BOAT, DEAD CLOWNS, BRUTAL and MUMMY MANIAC.
Last Call
ACTS OF DEATH is an above average low-budget slasher flick whose only flaw is it's slow pacing and to another extent, it's weak ending. The DVD itself features nothing in terms of special features , so I wouldn't recommend buying it... but if it's a slow night at the rental store and you're looking for something halfway entertaining (and you've seen just about everything else) then pick this badboy up... it won't blow your mind, but the kills are cool and well worth it.
