What's it about
A dude picks up a young girl, coerces her into having sex, and then kills her.
Is it good movie?

When I read up about this film, people had been touting it as if it was one of the worst pieces of depravity that would be unshakeable for anyone who watched it. I would have to disagree.

This movie centers around a pervert who picks up a young girl who is 18 (or..is she?), takes her to a hotel room with promises of making 'a movie'- it is obviously apparent that this is a film of a sexual nature.

And that's all the exposition you get, really. The beginning of the film ties in with the end of it, as we see our antagonist beating a girl to death. Throughout this film, we see flashbacks laid over top of this film of the last girl Brandon had sex with and killed. We know that this guy is nasty, and we know the whole film is leading up to his inevitable evil moment.

I'm not a big porn watcher by any stretch but I have been in University and seen my share. Popular stuff these days centers on 'man on the street' pickups where the subject is snatched off the street to do the horizontal mambo with the camera man. This is all amateur style stuff, and you won't have to look far on the internet to find it. It's always rehearsed, but looks real and I suppose that's the appeal.

Amateur Porn Star Killer is exactly the same thing, except it builds a sense of foreboding. For some reason, the whole film is shot with this strange dark filter over it, I don't know why. It's obviously modern, so why does the film have that strange grain layer over top of it? Also, the dialogue is very very quiet, I had to crank my volume several times to hear the whisper quiet voices of the two characters.

My biggest complaint is that nothing really happens in this film. I know that to some people, this might be a terrifying experience, but I found it sort of boring. It’s clear that Brandon is manipulating the young girl into having sex with him, but at almost no point is anything brutal or terrifying. It's a lot of small talk and gentle coercing that picks up a little bit of a nasty edge near the end, but besides making you feel a bit uncomfortable knowing what will happen, I wasn't bothered that much. The film felt long at 70 minutes.

As for the whole storyline of 'capture, rape and murder', I didn't see much of it. The girl got into the car willingly when she was asked, was treated rather politely for 90% of the film despite being conned, and as far as I could tell the eventual sex didn't seem like absolute rape. I'm not saying the victim was thrilled, but it was at no point a vicious, unwatchable screaming atrocity. And as for the murder? It was weak sauce. After all the tension and foreboding music, I expected the guy to go apesh*t on his victim. He doesn't, and I can't say that bums me out, but it isn't much of a payoff. All I could think was "all that for this?"
Video / Audio
Video is grainy and generally ugly looking, but I think that's the point.

I couldn't tell what the audio format was, but it seemed to be mono to me.
The Extras
First there's an interview with Michiko Jimenez and filmmaker Shane Ryan, where they're kneeling on the floor beside the hotel room bed discussing how they met and why they made the film and so on. Interesting enough.

There's also a brief Crime Scene Drive Thru where Shane Ryan literally drives around in his car to describe a bit of the setting of the film and why he chose certain areas. It's only 5 minutes long, but an okay feature.

There are also 5 short films from Shane Ryan, but they don't add much. They're often these bizarre pieces with no dialogue or blaring rock music. Clearly this guy likes to set an atmosphere and also really likes using camera filters. He also enjoys showing boobs and tortured love. I didn't care for many of these, but it's neat that they're on the disc.

Finally, 3 trailers for APSK, and one for Romance Road Killers.
Last Call
I didn't hate this film but I don't think I was the right audience for it. The acting is top notch and very believable and the juxtaposition of the other murders as foreshadowing was effective. Ultimately though, I thought this poorly titled film didn't shock me or disturb me or terrify me nearly as much as the hype had promised. I know some people may think I 'missed the point', but at the end of the day, I just wasn't disturbed.
