What's it about
A priest with a past and some dude’s daughter both end up waiting for the dude to show up at her house. But the only ones that show up are some human fodder and a bunch of zombies.
Is it good movie?

Awaken The Dead is a cheapie independent film that is written, produced, directed and edited by Jeffery McMichael Brookshire. When a priest shows up at some woman’s house at the request of her father, all hell breaks loose as zombies start the killing… Romero style. If Night of the Living Dead took place in the suburbs it might look a little bit like this. Mr. Brookshire had some interesting ideas involving government plots and a storyline with a jaded priest. He starts off slow and pulls you in thinking that it may be a better film than most of the low-budget zombie fare. But in the end, it really is a mediocre zombie flick with a couple of decent kills and bad make-up. There are moments here that do stand out and keep the pace moving; I dug some of the witty dialogue where attempts at humor actually work. And the “grainy” look worked well early on but began to wear thin after awhile. Not bad but not all that good either.

So why give it two stars instead of one or even one and a half? Well, if you are going to make a low-budget flick that revolves around two characters with a bunch of dialogue driven scenes, you could do much worse. Both Gary Kohn as the bad ass priest and Lindsey Morris as daddy’s pissed off little girl kept me involved. These are not award winning performances but they have heart. They played off each other well and I was able to suspend disbelief on much of what goes on due to that. Good job. The other main character, a Jehovah’s Witness by the name of Stanley, played by Nate Witty annoyed the hell out of me in the beginning. But after awhile, he kind of grew on me and gave a little comic relief. In the end I actually cared about him, even enough to ask “What the F*ck?” when the script dumps on his character for no good reason. These three actors do good work with what the have been given, yet sadly are the only characters I gave any thought to. This is a good attempt to make a zombie flick for a low budget with amateur actors and bad special effects, and thankfully he hired some lead actors with charisma and wrote a few funny words.

Last Call
With Awaken the Dead, Jeffery McMichael Brookshire attempts to inject some life into his no budget intestine eating zombies. And on a couple of levels it works. We get Gary Kohn, Lindsey Morris and Nate Witty who do their best and kept me involved. Good show guys. And we also get a couple of funny moments that are actually funny. Seriously, I laughed and I'm pretty sure I was supposed to. But this cheapie feels cheap and much of the time, can’t escape that. If you are looking for a good zombie flick you could do much worse, yet you could also do much better.
