What's it about
When Billy the Kid comes to the town of Deliverance, he kidnaps all the locals children and threatens to drink a whole lotta blood… funny, I don’t remember him being a vampire. So it’s up to that sexy chick with blades of steal, Rayne, to stop him before the train comes through this here town. I’m not kidding… that is the plot.
Is it good movie?
After the above description, I find it really hard to believe that I was somewhat entertained by Uwe Boll’s sequel to BloodRayne appropriately titled BloodRayne II: Deliverance. I’m not a fan of the man, although I think he sometimes presents a sort of, so bad it’s good aura to his films. But with this vampire western, I found just enough to get past the slow pacing and some blah dialogue. One of the main reasons, was the new girl in town, Natassia Malthe who replaced Kristianna Loken. Natassia is incredibly beautiful, and she is able to work with what she is given. She is believable as the half human/half vampire who wants to rid the world of filth. I was rooting for her, even when I felt that her character seemed much too weak to be some kind of superhero or whatever. A surprisingly good performance for this kind of film… thankfully, she’s better than Tara Reid, but who isn’t.

Along with the lovely Natassia, I also was happy to see Michael Paré as Pat Garret, who helps Rayne, at first not by her choice. He is a damn solid actor and is criminally underrated. Here, he finds a bit of chemistry with Rayne and that kept me along for the ride. I also appreciated a few surprisingly tense moments as the good guys take on the bad guys led by Billy the Kid. Now Zack Ward is nearly unrecognizable as Mr. Kid and at times he presents a pretty creepy villain. He has his moments where he drains a young girl of her blood while remaining calm and cool with his Transylvanian accent. Not a bad performance, although it’s too bad his dialogue was so lame. He gives it his all but sadly his character is pretty poorly written so he is much creepier when he is not talking.

As for what’s bad… it’s a film by Uwe Boll. For a vampire western, it feels much too long. This thing should be ninety minutes… tops, probably should be eighty. But it runs almost one hour and forty minutes and you feel it. The pacing is slow and ponderous, while it introduces some of the dudes you are supposed to root for way too late in the film so they become fodder. And I also found the lack of nudity and violence surprising. Come on, this is straight to DVD, you could of thrown in more than this. But I will say, Natassia looks amazing in her black leather Clint Eastwood impression. I also found that many of the minor characters seemed overly modern in the way they spoke. The western setting looked great but felt a bit fake. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. this ain’t.

Last Call
Maybe Uwe Boll is improving slightly in his technique, or I was just enthralled with Natassia Malthe as Rayne, but this is not a bad flick. It’s not necessarily a good one, but it may be worth a look if you’ve got nothing better to do. It’s also fun to see Michael Paré in what seemed to be one of the better roles as Pat Garret. He is a class act and he raises the bar a tad while on-screen. With all this garlicy, saloon-fightin’ goodness BloodRayne II still feels uneven and awkwardly paced. It is probably one of Mr. Boll’s better films and he give it a little more than he usually does. I’ve seen some really awful movies and this is not that awful. So saddle up the mule, drink a glass of whiskey and head on down to that ole’ television and give this buckaroo a watch… unless something else that is good is on.
