What's it about
A group of intellectually challenged but very hot psych nurses play a nasty urban legend game with an old cracked mirror in the basement of the state mental hospital. Insert violence and boob shots as needed. Repeat. It's up to a dedicated crime author, an inept cop and anyone else dumb enough to get involved to stop the curse of BLOODY MARY!
Is it good movie?
Yeah, it was fun. But not that much fun.

Hasn't the whole urban legend/old asylum thing been done to death already, and by much more skilled hands than these? Granted, this flick sported some cool shots, some ok performances (it's all about the nude and semi-nude here), and a couple of genuinely creepy moments, but all in all the parts did not get sewn together nicely. The result was a very run-of-the-mill mild on the gore "slasher" that was entertaining in an "I've got jack shit all else to do" kind of way, but failed to raise any spikes on the horror-meter.

Granted, the whole mirror thing was creepy, but the monster at the core of the film was lame to say the least. My cat makes scarier noises while hacking up mouse bones. The story never really comes together, nothing is ever truly explained (what was up with the blistery dude in the straightjacket!??!), the australian psychiatrist had a horrible accent, and the ending was just plain bad (good job smashing that evil mirror, lady!). The fact that they left things open for a sequel is being a tad presumptuous, but it makes me hope that the writer and director pull up their socks and give us a more worthy genre effort.

On the plus side, the flick was well shot, and the score wasn't half bad, but none of that helped. Poor effects, a handful of capable actors without much to work with, and a weak plot had this one limping right out of the gate. But in it's own way, it was fun to watch once. Definately not a film that stands up to repeated viewing, not when compared to the more quality stuff coming out these days.

The Extras
I was watching a screener, but from what I've seen of the features on the retail disc, I'm not missing much.
Last Call
Definately not one I'd recommend, but if there's nothing else available, rent it for a chuckle. Bloody Mary is a stock attempt at a slasher that we have seen a thousand times before and will continue to see down the road. Bargain bin STV stuff. Some of it shows promise, but the whole just doesn't congeal. Wicked dvd cover though, really. I liked that.
