What's it about
Follow the adventures of Conan the Barbarian in Conan the Adventurer. See, Adventurer sounds much safer for kids, right?
Is it good movie?
So I canít say I remember this series. Like at all. I donít know if it aired at 6:00 am on Saturdays or maybe it was on at the same time as Batman: The Animated series or Garfield, but nonetheless I was pleasantly surprised when this two-disc collection of Conan the Adventurer (The First Season) came in my mailbox. Now since Iíve never seen it, donít hold it against me if this was some fond childhood memory of yours or something. I can only look at the thing as a nerdy adult attempting to place his mind in that of a nerdy young kid.

Anyway, the show itself looks the same as all cartoons from the 80s/90s. Classic animation, bright colors, bad side characters. Very Hannah-Barbara looking. Itís hard not to think He-Man as this series (which ran around 1993) looked nearly like a carbon copy (right down to the silly sidekick). None of the stories are complex nor is there any character development, but then again I have to remember itís a kidís show. Actually, character development was never a strong point of the movies either. Regardless, Conan: The Adventurer doesnít have much to do with the Schwarzenegger series. Here, Conanís folks were frozen in stone by a curse from whatever the bad guyís name is (I think its Wrath-Amon). Adventures then happen and Conan always lives unscathed to fight another day. And he never fights James Earl Jones either.

Whatís great is that Conan runs around with a fur cape, a teeth-filled necklace, fur loincloth, and knee high boots. And this is for kids. Think about if you saw this guy walking down the street. Would he be someone youíd want the kiddos admiring? Doubtful. But then again, this isnít a barbarian. Nope, heís an adventurer.

Last Call
Conan: The Adventurer is a welcome break from what passes for modern Saturday morning cartoons, even if it is dated a copy of He-Man.
