What's it about
Explore the rise of Hollywoodís legendary B movie filmmaker Roger Corman as he breaks away from the studio system and begins making movies on his own, all of which are super low budget, super exploitive, and super profitable.
Is it good movie?
Being a fan of grindhouse style films, exploitation films, and monster films of the Ď70s and Ď80s, Iíve always been a huge of producer/director Roger Cormanís films. In fact, Iíd say anyone whoís seen a monster movie / exploitation film in the last 30 years and liked it can go ahead and thank Corman for the experience, as the man straight-up pioneered what it means to be a successful independent filmmaker by making loads and loads of monster/horror/sci-fi/action/exploitation films. But most havenít been exposed to the whole picture and thatís exactly what CORMANíS WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL sets out to do and (more or less) accomplishes.

Hanging out on the set of Cormanís latest monster movie at the time (DINOSHARK), the documentary provides a full-fledged history of the manís career, starting from his first film in the Ď50s all the way up to his deal with the SyFy Channel and everything in between. Told by Corman himself as well as a whoís who in Hollywood (Jack Nicholson, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese), the film depicts a friendly and extremely warm (if often eccentric) man whoís passion for making movies is only out-weighed by his passion for business and turning a profit. The whole mentality of making independent films today (of which make a profit) came from Corman, who not only practiced it but perfected it as well.

As entertaining as it is informative and interesting, CORMANíS WORLD is fun little flick to watch, as all of the interviews are spliced together with clips and trailers from Cormanís most famous (and some not-so-famous) films. In one respect, itís a great place to see bits and pieces of everything from BOXCAR BERTHA to DEATH RACE 2000 (and about 100 other different movies) in the confines of a single 89 minute film.

But more than just the films he made over the years, CORMANíS WORLD really depicts the kind of man Corman is as a person (at least on the business side), and the integrity heís kept over the years working the movie business as he sees fitónot as some studio suits see it. So not only do you get to hear all the behind the scenes shenanigans of the making of some of your favorite B movies, but you get to hear about what kind of man Corman was to work with and really see first-hand how a guy could make hundreds upon hundreds of movies and never lose a dime on any of them. With a track record like that, itís no wonder the man is still making films like DINOSHARK and CAMEL SPIDERS today.

Video / Audio
Video: High definition is immaculate throughout in its 1.85:1 aspect ratio, even the clips from all the old school exploitation flicks looked amazing.

Audio: Mixed in 5.1 Dolby surround sound, it's about as full-bodied and lush as you'd expect from a documentary like this. Again, even the old school clips had the surround sound, which is great.

The Extras
Extended Interviews: If you couldn't get enough of the interviews with Eli Roth, Penelope Spheeris, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese, then you'll dig this collection of interviews that didn't make the final cut (just short of 20 minutes worth). Mostly personal stories about Corman and making movies with him, all of which are interesting to hear.

Special Messages to Roger: All the big Hollywood names that were interviewed to talk about Corman throughout the film are featured here, delivering personal messages directly to Corman and essentially saying 'thank you'. Again, if you wanted more from the interviews than what was featured in the final film, you'll dig this.

Last Call
If you weren't a fan of Roger Corman or his movies before, CORMAN'S WORLD will likely change your mind. The film paints a picture of a life-loving and energetic guy who not only loved to make movies on the cheap, but loved to turn a profit in the process. Not only do the films speak for themselves, but CORMAN'S WORLDS features some really great interviews from some of Hollywood's biggest names, all of which owe their start to Corman for giving them a chance. For fans of exploitation and monster movies, CORMAN'S WORLD is a no brainer.
