What's it about
A group of college students working on a group project stumble upon a lame ass cult that worships an ancient ho.
Is it good movie?
I feel like we need a cure for the boring crap that is released on DVD. Some kind of injection that would force filmmakers to make better bad movies, or at the very least give them the balls to show a little skin and break some rules. The formula for fun and trashy horror has never and will never change. All you need is a story (it doesnít have to be that good), some blood, a little tits and ass, and some humor to balance it out. I love bad horror movies that donít make excuses for what they are. Horror should not be a movie of the week market, and lately it seems that all that makes it onto DVD are WB acted crap with no tangible characters, no fun kills, and definitely no skin.
Cult falls into this category. A group of college students are doing a project on a cult that worships the statue of an ancient ho with a super powered amulet. One of the students, Mindy (Rachel Miner) has a strong connection to the cult (go figure) and soon finds out that her mother was one of the cult members and her dad (whoís dating her hot porn star looking professor that gave her the assignment) has been hiding this secret from her. Iím surprised it took her so long to figure it all out because it only took me five minutes. There is even a book that sketches out pictures of who is going to die next, and a bad guy that uses Jedi mind tricks to wipe out his victims.
All of the girls are hot, but stay clothed for most of the flick. Some of the acting is good, but most of it is just terrible. Joel Michaely did a good job as Alex the nerdy member of the group and Taryn Manning did a fine job as Cassandra. The rest of the cast seemed out of place. A few of the scenes seemed to be thrown in just because filler was needed, and believe me filler was needed.
On the bright side the movie looked good and sounded even better. The sound was clear and the transfer looked killer. Cult is not a fun movie, and at the end of it I felt like I had wasted time that I could have spent watching the porn channel. A note to the director of Cult who has skill, if you want to make a living shooting bad movies with hot girls and no redeeming value besides a quick buck then you should consider directing porn. With porn even if the plot sucks, and the lighting is bad you can still get something out of it. In the end this flick seemed like nothing more than a quick buck for the studio. I just wish the studios would use their talent base to produce films that the average viewer would remember for longer than 30 seconds after watching it.
Video / Audio
Video: Looked good.
Audio: Sounded fine.
No extras for me to talk bad about.
If you like WB movies of the week this might do it for you, but if like me you want your horror films to fall as far from that category as possible steer clear of this one.
