What's it about
A cop who's down on his luck ends up running into a woman who looks just like his long lost girlfriend. Many side plots and whole lot of craziness ensue.
Is it good movie?
This movie was nuts.
Really, I don't mean to be so 'simple' about it, but this movie made very little sense to me while going full-throttle, balls-to-the-wall, with its action sequences.
We've got hitmen, we've got lawyers, former reality tv cops, all intertwining each other's lives. Our reality show cop, Suen, is obsessed with his lost girlfriend. To is a criminal lawyer who always helps the bad guys win, and Coke, well, he's that aforementioned hitman. These guys are flying in and out of each other's lives, directly (and indirectly) causing a whole lot of grief for one another.
If I were to try to explain the plot of this flick to you, this review'd be many pages long. Let's put it this way: Divergence is a slick, intense, and smart action thriller. In fact, it might be too smart- there's so much going on at one time that it's hard to take it all in. There are so many small sideplots that trail off to nowhere that its hard to determine why they exist. The film simply gets confusing!
This film can be filed under 'e' for entertaining. If you like close combat martial arts, chase scenes, and a plot with more twists and turns than a slinky, this one's going to be up your alley. It's very well acted throughout (especially Daniel Wu Coke), it's got style up the ying-yang, and a wicked cool 'Hong Kong' atmosphere to it that puts it over the top. It's heavy on characterization and relationships too, which I really appreciated.
Video / Audio
I'll be honest: Divergence was hard to follow at times, and I did suffer from some culture shock, or perhaps I just got lost in translation sometimes due to the subtitles in the film. However, this didn't stop me from enjoying it one bit. I hope Tartan brings us more of this type of movie, because if you like a brain-busting, pulse pounding good time, Divergence might just be the distraction you've been looking for!
