What's it about
Segments for the 1970's Canadian television show aimed at children. This campy series featured Vincent Price as the host. This DVD features this poetic fellow, with the rest of the gang joining in for the fun.
Is it good movie?
Vincent Price is arguably one of the greatest horror icons that has ever lived. Not only a major film star back in the day, he has also brought us some creepy good times by doing some guest work on the classic Alice Cooper album, “Welcome To My Nightmare”. He also had some fun with doing a children’s show in Canada called, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. I had the opportunity to check out four DVD’s that offer up a “best of” for the series, and yes, one of them featured the great Mr. Price. And back in 1971, he was still the king of chills, even if it isn’t really utilized here, in a children’s show.

Thanks to the fact that Mr. Price only shows up for the beginning, and with quick little stories throughout, it seemed as though this DVD is just counting on fans of Price to make a blind copy. And in many ways, he is so delightfully goofy here, it is not necessarily a bad thing for a fan to own. I just wish there had been more of Mr. Price. The man was an amazing talent and yes, you can see that here. As he plays the man who introduces each episode, and tells us little anecdotes and poems about the count, the librarian and of course, that sore sight for anybody’s eyes, Grizelda. At least it is refreshing to see Mr. Price, even if the jokes are unfunny, he was just a charming fellow with the ability to pull off most of them.

I’m sure this children’s series might have been very entertaining back in 1971. There is a certain charm to it, and I probably would’ve enjoyed it if I were young, as I was always into monsters. But truth is, this particular disc doesn’t include all that much of its selling point. Vincent Price only shows up every few minutes, telling us one of those great jokes, but hey, it’s Vincent Price and he is a legend. So if you are a fan of his, or you have fond memories of this particular sketch comedy show, I would absolutely recommend it. For anyone else, may I suggest something completely different.
Video / Audio
Video: This full screen transfer is good for what you are getting, this is an old show and Im surprised it looks as clear as it does.

Audio: The mono audio works. I’m guessing that this is as good as it is going to get for this series.
The Extras
There are no bats in this belfry.
Last Call
Vincent Price is a king when it comes to horror. So it is nice to know that he did this family friendly sketch show for children. For me though, he wasn’t in this enough, and because his scenes are so small, it seems to be overloaded with some of the other, less interesting segments. But if you are a fan of Mr. Price, this is at least worth checking out.
