What's it about
A young man loses his sight and gets a new look on life thanks to a risky experiment that transfers wolves eye’s for his non-working ones. But it seems that eyesight is not the only thing the new peepers get him. He now likes to take off his shirt and have visions of wolves chasing around buffalo.
Is it good movie?
Are you looking for a bloodless man/wolf movie that features Cory Manteith without his shirt? Do you feel the need to see a bunch of actors who look either bored, worried or constipated? If you say yes to either of those questions, Hybrid is for you. I was sure by the DVD cover that this would be one of those cheesy Sci-Fi Channel flicks with bad special effects and maybe a couple of gore shots added for the DVD. Hell, it even says right on the back, “The Hunt Will Be Bloody”… oh really? When? Was it the time that they slapped some red stuff on half-naked Cory to make it look like he had fed on some dude? Even the picture of him on the back, it looks like he just chowed down on some poor victim. Too bad there was nothing like that in the film.

Do you want the plot? Really? Okay, fine. Some guy working in some factory or someone notices his a-hole co-working smoking when he should be working. He tells him to get back to work. About two minutes later, that same douche bag is smoking away. Once again, he tells this moron to get off his arse. The lazy co-worker flicks his cigarette off camera, and a big fire starts. So Aaron (Manteith) runs down and tries to help this guy, but is left partially blind by an explosion. Lucky for him some “doctor” played (?) by Justine Bateman is working on some bizarre experiment of using the eyes of a wolf for a complete eye transplant. Yada, yada, yada, he gets the transplant and suddenly he is a hybrid. But you know how experiments go… wrong. So he wants to smack people around and eat red meat because he might be becoming a wolf. And yes, as luck would have it, he meets some half breed girl named Lydia (?) and she helps him deal with his wolfie parts.

Where to begin. The direction and the music telegraphs every “suspenseful” moment. Most of the actors look, as I mentioned above, bored or constipated or somewhere in between. Justine Bateman was never one of my favorite actresses and here is why. She is overly serious and just sort of flat. Her character is at one moment, thinking of the experiment and the next, she is contemplating the morality of it. Each and every arc is completely unconvincing. I will say that Cory does a decent job with or without his shirt. But again, the dialogue is so dumb, as is most of what happens throughout the film. In fact, there is so much not to like that it is hard to pin it down to one thing. Plot holes? Yes. Dull? Absolutely? Just plain dumb? Absolutely. To narrow it down to a single bad moment is almost impossible. But I did find a wonderful little chuckle in me when wolf boy leapfrogged over a security officer. Ugh.
Video / Audio
Video: This is actually a very good Widescreen presentation. I’m guessing when this was on the Fox Family Channel it looked great too.

Audio: The Dolby Digital sounded good also. In fact, this is a good transfer all around.
The Extras
Ah, no... literally nothing.
Last Call
Bloodless. Thrill-less. Pointless. What seemingly would have been a Sci-Fi Channel movie premiere feels more like a Fox Family Channel Special Presentation. I guess there is some kind of message about accepting you for you. Especially when you happen to have a dead animals eye’s placed in yours during a painfully dull surgery. I am giving this one star just because it didn’t look cheap and the wolves were very good. And all the teenage girls and gay men might really enjoy the oft-shirtless Monteith.
