What's it about

Three friends pool their cash to purchase a supposed ghost on an online auction site. The item description promises that the ghost will do whatever is asked of her. When the package arrives, it contains nothing more than an old jewelery box with the picture of the ghost inside a locket. What the seller fails to mention is that the ghost is the vengeful spirit of an Irish servant girl named Katie Malone who's one mean psychotic bitch. Oh, and the requests? For every one that she grants, someone has to die. Also, did I mention that Superman's in this one?

Is it good movie?

You've heard it all before from me regarding many indie filmmakers. It seems that almost nobody as a new filmmaker wants to take a chance with a new and creative story. Instead, they go the safe route, leading to the same tired story and blah, blah, blah. Well, director Carlos Ramos Jr. must have gotten the memo, since KILL KATIE MALONE tries something new with the ghost story genre that doesn't involve ripping off THE GRUDGE or THE RING. That's one hurdle. Does it clear the others?

Elaborating a bit on the story, one of the ideas centres around the concept of family. You see, the idea is that because as a little girl, Katie Malone had a crappy family. So in response, the ghost's aim is to keep the family of whomever owns it together, and not letting anything come between it. Case in point, the three friends share a closeness that could resemble a family. Now I'm not some sentimental so and so, but it's an interesting idea that the writers have put in place with the opportunity to explore. Scares wise, the film tries to deliver on the creep factor, and for an independent film it puts in a good effort. Obviously, things aren't going to be incredibly over-the-top in terms of gore, but sometimes the simplest is the more disturbing, with the death of the English teacher being the standout. There are some obvious CG moments that are more laughable than anything, but they aren't the highlights.

However, the film falls hard when it comes to dialogue. It's another case of characters spouting bad lines or saying something that no one in reality would say. It's especially noticeable when it comes to talk of "the family" between the three protagonists. At one point, one of the friends, Dixie, is accused of plagiarism. While being consoled by the other two friends in "the family", Ginger and Jim, Jim starts knawing on pizza and giving a half-assed attempt at supporting Dixie. Sure is love and support there. Throw in others like Nick Hogan (yes, Hulk Hogan's son) bullying Jim and saying that he'll "eliminate his ass" or the ill-fated English prof saying that she doesn't scare easily because she teaches Shakespeare, and you get the idea.

Overall though, the film is just one that squanders what could've been a nice ghost story. It's just largely uninteresting once it gets going, and had me looking at the film's runtime and wondering when it'd be done. Even Dean Cain, Superman himself, is wasted in this film. He only shows up for 5 minutes at the very most, and he's the original seller of the box! Had the script been tighter and the dynamic of "the family" been explored and used to it's fullest extent, it would've been a more enjoyable way to spend an evening. Instead, it's a ho-hum affair that had me wondering why Teri Hatcher couldn't have brought him over to Desperate Housewives.

Last Call

What started with an interesting concept that had potential to be something new, KILL KATIE MALONE feels like a missed opportunity compounded by some putrid dialogue. Fans of Dean Cain will probably only want to see the start and end of the film, while the rest of us put this one in the "fire and forget" column.
