A group of friends travel to Japan and wind up visiting strip joints and porno theatres to drink and score some blow. They piss off a mob boss and end up picking the wrong porno theatre.
Its difficult to not compare this movie to Eli Roth's Hostel
. It's still a fairly recent movie and there are definitely some big similarities between the two that you just can't shake. The film starts off with the group going to several bars to get drunk and high when the dumb one of the bunch accidentally knocks over his drinks on a Yakuza mob boss. A local helps them get away harm-free but they wind up going into a porno theatre to "relax."
After lots of bare breasts and cleavage in the first act (much appreciated, gals), there is some very light character development. Most of them are generic and one-dimensional, which makes for typical horror fodder. Once the shit goes down, we get treated to the good red stuff we came to see. The town gets painted red with lots of stabbings, a decap and some interesting forms of punishment that I'll save for those who want to be surprised. The make up and practical effects were well done. And it doesn't happen very often to me, being desensitized and all, but there was a scene or two that made me a bit uneasy. Bravo!
As far as the story goes, there isn't much to it. From time to time we get new bits of information to just keep the story going along til the end. The direction can be hit and miss sometimes. Some shots are shot well, others are of the shaky cam variety. Also, some of the fight scenes were dodgy. The acting is also a mixed bag, with several scenes containing both good and cheesy, over the top acting.
I thought Hostel
was an alright flick, and gets pretty much the same reaction from me. It's a decently made gore flick with well done FX that actually outdoes Hostel on the gross out scale, though if you've seen Roth's movie, you've basically seen this. But you could do a lot worse with the direct-to-video dreck that's out on the shelves now.
