What's it about
Jacob is really, really allergic to light and has to confine himself to darkness. No matter what he does, he can't seem to keep his hunger under control despite eating like a madman. Soon, Jacob turns to human blood to sustain him, which gets him in all kinds of trouble.
Is it good movie?
I took one look at the awful Photoshopped cover art for Midnight Son and immediately bristled at the thought of having to suffer through another lame "terrifying love story" (that's legitimately listed as a tagline for the movie).

I'm happy to report that I've been once again proven wrong by sliding the disc into my player and enjoying one of the best low-budget indie horror flicks I've seen in quite some time. It was wrong and foolish of me to have thoughts of Twilight whirl through my head when I saw this. It is indeed a vampire love story, but it isn't lame and hackneyed like the dreck brought forward by our skinny pouting teen idols.

This is a story of love, infatuation and addiction as our lost soul Jacob winds up finding love in the coke-addled Mary (he gets a taste for her while making out during a coke binge as she springs a nosebleed). This poor dude has to realize and come to terms with the fact that he's afflicted with a taste for blood and has the opportunity to use his relationship to confront the world.

The film has a deliberate pace and takes its time letting the plot points arrange themselves. Watching Jacob turn down his dark path isn't an easy journey, from licking the blood from a steak off a plate to busting into a hospital's biohazard area (yuck), you'll root for Jacob and you will also curse his decisions.

Also worth noting is that the acting in this film is fantastic both from the leads and supporting cast.
Zak Kilberg and Maya Perish are incredibly believable and strong in their roles as Jacob and Mary- you'll believe in them and hope they can get through it. Our villain is played by an enabling, substance-pushing hospital orderly named Marcus, brilliantly performed by Joe Jonz as he turns in a bizarre and charismatic showing. Hell, pay enough attention and you'll even pick out Batman 89's own Bob the Goon (Tracey Walter) as a friendly old janitor!

Even the gore and CGI range from passable to quite good as the film carries on. Sure, it's not about the murder so much here but when it happens,it doesn't disappoint.

Without question, you should give this a look. It's different, modern, well acted, gory where it counts and can be downright touching at times. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Video / Audio
This one comes to us in  1.78:1 widescreen and looks pretty ugly, to be honest. This isn't a film with a great budget and as a result the footage is kind of grainy and the colors are off.

Audio comes in Dolby 5.1 and sounds pretty decent, althought dialogue tends to be a bit low.

The Extras
If you're into it, there are a few minutes of deleted scenes.

There are also some short interviews with the cast and crew included here.

An excellent commentary track with director Scott Leberecht, Zak Kilber, Maya Parish and Joe Jonz is also included and gives a ton of detail about how damn hard it can be to make a film with no money. Super interesting and really honest stuff here.
Last Call
I really, really enjoyed Midnight Son. It goes to show that not all vampire movies have to be terrible. It's gritty, nasty, honest and will undoubtedly prey on your emotions. This is clearly a labor of love and one that deserves your time and cash.
