What's it about
A serial killer with a fascination for mummys kidnaps women and bores them to death. He kills them in other ways but the dialogue will kill anyone eventually.
Is it good movie?
Mummy Maniac is a sleazy and incredibly repetitive film. Here it is in a nutshell; a dude posing as a cop kidnaps a woman. The woman screams as she runs around what is supposed to be the back of a truck. She is then led into what looks like a men’s room that is painted back and told to sit down and asked a bunch of lame questions. She doesn’t fight back even though she is not tied down, even when it is OBVIOUS he’s not a cop. Finally he kills them and wraps up their head with bandages because he digs mummys. What I especially love is images of the woman tied up and naked as he… I GUESS… has his way with them. But I’m guessing that it’s a fantasy because they don’t live long enough. Okay, you got that? That EXACT sequence happens like five or six times. The same f*cking sequence. This has to be the most boring “torture porn” next to that awful Zombie Nation that I have ever seen in my life.
The actors, including Ben Stewart as the crazed killer are fine. And I did appreciate the first victim who tried to talk her way out of it by making him see her as a human being. I also thought that the editing and direction were okay. Editor Steven Meyer (if that is his real name) did a pretty good job with spicing the images up. But this is like a short film repeated with different actors. I felt like I was watching some kind of scene study in drama class that happens to be a little on the creepy side. I also really hated the whole cliché of my Mommy was an evil bitch that seems to like to watch me torture women. As he copies that ridiculous torture sequence, her image appears watching over him as she seems to study his work. There is a mirror and she standing there watching him. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The way it was shot it looked like she was watching from a window. There are also scenes with a psychiatrist and of course moments with mother of the year who gives a very amateurish performance and she looks a little too much like Divine.
Video / Audio
Video: Shot on Digital, this 16x9 Widescreen transfer is pretty good. Too bad the movie isn’t.
Audio: The audio is okay as I like the score in 5.1 Dolby Digital but the dialogue was uneven and was very cheap.
I guess nobody wanted to really talk about this movie because we get nothing. A Trailer for “Mummy Maniac” and a few others for “H.P. Lovecraft’s The Tomb”, Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave”, “Zombie Nation”, “Chicago Massacre Richard Speck” and an ad for FearNet.com.
A repetitively dull example of how not to do a torture film. It isn’t bad enough that this whole sub-genre is getting old, but this includes cheap special effects alongside a really slow moving sequence of torture. The only one being tortured here is the audience.
