What's it about
Two ousted 14th century knights escort a witch to a monastery. Crazy things then occur.
Is it good movie?
Iíve developed quite a soft spot of Nic Cage. He long ago stopped trying to act and started cash the paychecks, but for some reason his money grabs seem so much more desperate than that of other stars whoíve done the same. His roles seem more and more wild and unpredictable. In Season of the Witch, Cage stars as Behmen, a knight who once fought for the crusades but became deserter after he killed one too many folk. Along with Perlman, they roam the countryside looking for things to do. They happen upon a woman being accused of witchcraft, so exchange for a pardon for deserting they lead her escort.

Overall, the movie is enjoyable, action-filled and entertaining. Surprisingly, I dug Cage in the role of a medieval knight, which really itís amazing that someone cast him in the role. Honestly, shouldnít this have gone to someone like in their 30s? Someone more believable in the action department? Or at least who could do a British accent? Well, Cage isnít 30 (heís closing in on 50) and he doesnít even attempt the accent. In fact, everyone minus Pearlman and Cage have a British accent. It makes no sense, but it really doesnít matter. Itís a Cage movie.

Anyway, despite the utter stupidity of the casting, somehow it works as a Cage vehicle. Acting for cash or not, he can still bring it at times. He has this type of character down: the disenfranchised loner with nowhere to turn. Moviewise, thereís plenty of action and suspense. I like the witch who remains mysterious throughout, just giving hints of what sheís capable of. The entire movie remains dark, leaving plenty of room for creepy and eerie things to happen. In the end things get a little obvious, but this movie does its job of capturing the medieval look and feel.
Video / Audio
Video: A crisp and clear Widescreen presentation.

Audio: Presented with the power of 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround.
The Extras
Notta on my version. Final DVD may differ.
Last Call
Everything is fairly predicable, but that doesnít mean Season of the Witch isnít a fun ride especially with the always likeable Perlman riding shotgun and Cage being, well, cagey.
