What's it about
Meet Kristel. Her Pop was offed in a car crash while researching serial killers. For some reason, as a part of the coping process, Kristel decides to gather up her pals and head off to where else, an abandoned mine where an especially brutal killer was dispatched. Lo and behold, kids start dying. Has Andries Martiens, deadly serial killer, re-animated and come back to haunt these new victims?
Is it good movie?
hat a fun time this flick was. Slaughter Night (originally known as SL8N8) is a film that hearkens back to the good (and not so good) days of the 80s, when boobs, blood and exploitation were king- the slasher era. this movie is rather self-aware, and knows completely what it has set out to do.

The movie doesn't waste a lot of time with stupid things like character development, instead it has a short few scenes of exposition early on (and a ouija board, originalno?), and then moves on to the meat of the story, when the crew has set up camp in the cave. The characters that are there are rather lame, dull, and poorly acted. That being said, the directors know the score, and they don't skimp out where it counts. Just when you think you have the death scene all plotted out, the put a swerve on the audience and toss another shrimp on the barbie; these guys cook with gas. You'll high five your friends during the elaborate death scenes.

The film is also rather stylish, with quick cuts, dark colors and an unsettling atmosphere. The movie moves along at a frantic pace, and unfortunately, the camera moves along at that pace too- hold the damn thing still!

Really, there isn't a whole lot else to say about this flick. The characters are cutouts, the plot is a bit hackeneyed, but the whole thing is done with feeling, and people who care about the genre, and have studied their source material rather well. I appreciated the creative practical effects, and enjoyed the way the filmmakers painted the cave walls red.
Video / Audio
Slaughter Night, although dark, is given a great widescreen transfer from the folks at Tartan video, looks great.

Audio is also very nice, although a bit front heavy. Yes kids, it is in Dolby 5.1!
The Extras
Slaughter Night, although dark, is given a great widescreen transfer from the folks at Tartan video, looks great.

Audio is also very nice, although a bit front heavy. Yes kids, it is in Dolby 5.1! Tartan put together a short Making of Slaughter Night feature that was pretty standard, watchable, you'll gain a bit of insight from the directors, and a few interviews with the cast.

Other than that, there isn't much meat. You'll get a few short outtakes, and a trailer too.

Also, in case you didn't know, this movie is presented in its original Dutch language with English Subtitles.
Last Call
Slaughter Night won't be a pick for film of the year, but as far as slasher-type films go, it's certainly stylish enough to be watchable, and full of the nasty bits. You could certainly do worse with the Tartan label, so if you like violence and don't mind stupid characters (you're a horror fan..of course you don't mind!), check this one out.
