What's it about
An evil motherly spirit runs amuck in New York, possessing women to drown their kids and only one of NYPDís finest can stop the madness.
Is it good movie?
Spanish-influenced films are far and few between. They pop up every so often, but to have a movie with mostly Latino actors that doesnít force the point home seems fresh, allowing examination of a different culture without announcing, ďHey, weíre Latino, look at our differences!Ē Instead, these characters just hint at their cultural background, allowing Spanish Harlem to tell their story for them. Unfortunately, thatís all The Cry got right.

Also, if done right, having a police angle in a supernatural tale can work great; itís like combining two separate worlds, and for some reason, having a cop investigate things that donít make sense works just super. However, including this in the plot is where the only other interesting element of The Cry comes from: the two detectives work well off each other, the driving force with their effective chemistry. Notably, I actually liked Perez, the partner with a love for pictures and ego. Itís not like heís not a new creation, but he worked well with all the depressed freaking characters here even though heís as hollow than an empty Coke can. As for the lead Detective Scott, heís a pathetic excuse for a character, barren with a weak back-story of him having a dead kid too. It all seems forced. The character drives around and stares out the window without any sort of analyzing. It all seems like a cheap, thin story to use the Mexician legend to cut a few throats.

ďOne angry bitchĒ effectively describes that legend, the filmís villain, a female spirit who hunts down mothers and forces them drown the kids in a pink-eye possessed state. This spirit, known as La Llorona, is an actual urban myth, a woman who long along drowned her on child and still seeks others to join her misery, asking them to cry with her. Of course, once they kill the kids and wake up, they do just that. Oh yeah, and in the middle of all this comes a psychic artist, who has her own kids and knows somethingís up.

Where the film lost me comes in the third act, where it landed in a giant toilet bowl and someone needed to flush the thing. Nothing makes sense past this point as characters do stupid things and the ghost starts killing men out of revenge. What? Why would the ghost start taking out people who have nothing to with kids? Director Bernadine Santistevan overuses all the elements she found useful, like a kid that learns a phrase and repeats it over and over again. I donít know how many times the music score would blare suddenly for no reason. Thatís fine if done once or twice, but it seemed like it occurred every ten minutes. That gets damn old damn fast, ends up like a generic, shallow attempt to educated, and horrify all at the same time. What few aspects that held my interest were quickly lost as the entire movie just doesnít make a lick of sense and ended up just giving me a headache.

The Extras
Legend of La Llorona: Not a good one for the lazy as itís a written text explaining the legend. Couldnít they have read it to us? Thoughts of the Director: No video of her, just snap shots of the movie with she talks the thing up. Short Film: A mini-doc with interviews of various people discussing the legend. Not as interesting as one might think as it seems to undercut the importance of the legend.
Last Call
The Cry is sometimes engaging, yet annoying at times with the over use of quick cuts, sudden screams, and whispering voices. Whatís worse, what little gore that happens, sucks balls. No blood. No gushing wounds. Just cheap makeup and open eyes.
