What's it about
Meet Roy Tunt. Roy is a bit of a nut in that he's gripped by an intense case of OCD. He's a bird watcher, and he has decided to visit a rarely-populated hide (bird watching location) to try and see a rare bird. Of course, things are never easy for poor Roy, who ends up coming across a beaten and battered young man named Dave who is trying to find refuge. All is going seemingly well, until Roy catches wind of the police being on the hunt for a wanted man.
Is it good movie?
This one is a real sort of odd couple character study, with one
buttoned down twitchy uptight collector who talks to a photo of his
ex-wife meeting up with the rough and tumble tatted-up tough guy who
meets him at the wrong place and wrong time.
However, the men begin to forge a somewhat uneasy bond (over
sandwiches, no less) and start killing time together until that fateful
radio message blares through warning us that there's a man of caution
on the loose who fits Dave's build, and the tension begins to mount.
Based on a small two man play, this one focuses on uncomfortable
relationships between two people who are forced to look each other over
and eventually end up telling one another their innermost secrets and
desires. It's an interesting dynamic, watching his frantic and
meticulous bird watcher dealing with the intensity of the potential
The acting here is top notch and it shines through, as the performances
anchor the film. There are a lot of little details that come out
throughout the film that reveal more about the plot as it goes on (both
spoken and unspoken, Dave has some nasty flashback thought processes
that reveal some unfriendly things).
This isn't a completely serious movie, as it holds many darkly comedic
moments throughout while both characters are interrupting one another's
world. The movie does build and build until you really gain a sense of
danger for the participants. Is Dave really the man he says he is? Is
Roy innocent, or does he hold nasty secrets (why does he love power
tools so much)? There's a lot to be learned through little physical
"tells" and words being dropped.
The film leads up to a tense, nasty discovery that really rocks the
film's foundation. You might see it coming, but I'll admit I didn't
totally have it. If you have a sharp eye, you'll pick up a few things.
With that said, it wraps things up well and in an undoubtedly

The Hide is a great, tense and original thriller of a movie that provides some great insight and even a few laughs along the way. I highly recommend it.
