What's it about
Based loosely on a Hans Christian Anderson fairty tale, Red Shoes deals with a pair of cursed red shoes that travel along through time, killing people.
Is it good movie?
Believe it or not, this is the second time i've tried to post this review. I had written it in its entirety after watching it a week or so ago, and my hard drive got erased , thus leaving me high and dry. This led me to think, perhaps I should watch Red Shoes again, and gain a new perspective on it. Originally, my review was quite harsh- I wasn't a big fan of the film at all. Having watched it a second time, do you think my opinion changed?
The answer is 'yes', but with reservations. Red Shoes isn't a bad film, in fact, it has some moments which are quite enjoyable. However, lets start with the bad. Unfortunately, this movie is another 'cursed object' movie. I have had enough! J-Horror can do so much better, but it seems like the popular craze is to have the cursed object and the creepy girl, and this movie has both. The plot is sort of predictable, with a Woman and her daughter seeking refuge from a deadbeat husband, moving into a run-down apartment(sound familiar..Dark Water maybe?). There aren't a lot of effective scenes, but there are plenty of 'boo' scares. I also thought the ending was a bit weak as well.
However, let me tell you what I did like! I enjoyed the backstory of the cursed shoes, shown through varying flashback sequences throughout the film. I thought these were well-executed (although at times, poorly timed), and added character. I also thought that Yeon-ah Park, the little girl who plays the main character's daughter did an awesome job. She was put in some nasty situations, and I totally bought her performance. I must also give props to the movie's stylish direction. It had some creepy looking shots (they didn't convey much, but they looked awfully neat. It also brings the gore, painting the town red, you'd never think those shoes could do so much damage, but if you hate people who have legs, you'll want to check this out..enough said.

Really, there's not a lot more I can say. I was wrong about Red Shoes, and i'm glad I watched it again. It's a decent, quick paced horror flick that brings the blood, even if the premise is sort of lame and the scares can be cheap. You could do worse with J-Horror, you could watch some of the more bizarre Tartan releases like Tetsuo, which was just strange. That being said, check this out if you're into J-Horror!
