What's it about
Some pals end up shipwrecked and have to take refuge in an abandoned lighthouse. Of course, strange things start happening and people start arguing and it would appear that evil forces are at work. They eventually find a diary that explains all of the horrific events that had happened on the island and the curse that has befallen them.
Is it good movie?
Well, this one is a bit of a stinker. You'd think that with a straightforward plot and some decent horror elements that the film might come off better than it did, but alas it was not to be. Anyway, there really isn't a lot of meat to this one. The friends are hit by a boat that turns out to be captained by ghost pirates and what ensues is one of those 'can't we all just get along/human nature' sort of plots.
Now, this is a low budget effort and I have no problems with that. The movie tries to put some substance into its characters and doesn't use a lot of crazy effects to achieve its purpose, but unfortunately there isn't anything really memorable going on. Shadows is a concoction that's half drama, half historical horror but it seemed that the cast wasn't totally game. The only real actress with chops was Nalita Murray, who plays one of the damsels in distress.
Unfortunately, there isn't much else going on to make this movie watchable and there's a bit too much on the negative side. Besides a plot a bit too steeped in melodramatic nuisances, this movie just doesn't look good. The whole thing is really dark and while that can build atmosphere, when things get tense everything becomes a muddled blur. On top of that, the dialogue sounds awful. I don't mean that it is always poorly written but you can barely hear it at times. This is not good.
There are a few twists and turns to be found in these Shadows, but they all seem very familiar and will undoubtedly cause some of you to groan out loud. Sometimes, a ghostly pirate just isn't enough when almost everything else is serviceable at best.
Video / Audio
This is a screener disc and no specs are listed.
The only feature on this disc that I could find was a roll of brief outtakes.
Also worth mentioning is that it took me 3 different dvd players to be able to navigate the menus at all.
Disappointing at best, this is a low budget indie flick that's basically dead in the water. With a bit more polish and a tad more spice in the script, this might have been a bit better.
