TWINS OF EVIL
Reviewed by: Andre Manseau
What's it about
A couple of orphaned twins named Freida and Mariah shack up with old Uncle Gustav. Of course, they have no idea that he heads up the Brotherhood, a group of happy fellows who like to hunt down and burn witches. Naturally, Freida doesn't much like being told what to do, so she slips out of Gus' iron-ruled home and shacks up with the evil Count Karnstein. It's up to the one pure sister and Gus' group of happy hellhunters to take down the Count and rescue Freida!
Is it good movie?
I haven't been exposed to a lot of classic Hammer horror in my day, but
I have been working my way into it. I'll always remember Twins of Evil
for having such badass poster art though. As for the film itself? Well,
it's a fun romp.
How do you feel about boobs? I hope you like them, because there are a
lot of girls who are strapped up for your pleasure in this one. Toss in
a healthy dose of witch trials and vampirism and you've got one
incredible load of evil to deal with!
It's interesting too, because there are almost two villains in this
one- Peter Cushing turns in a great performance as the powerfully
charged Gustav, who is really a bit of a nut. Technically, he's
supposed to be a good guy, but the dude ends up being so tripped up in
his religious faith that he seems to be wiping out innocent women who
just happen to be suspected of evil. So yeah, he's taking down those
who aren't guilty- plus, he keeps a tight leash on his hot young
nieces. It's a surprisingly well rounded performance. He's a man of
conviction who is really quite simply misguided.
As for the nieces, they're certainly fun to watch as they turn from
happy young ladies to conflicted evil (well, one of them anyway).
They're played by Maria and Madeline Gellhorn and they pull off a
convincing performance. Watching Freida become undead and punishing her
equally hot twin sister is admittedly..well, hot! They've got to deal
with Anton, our young male hero who falls for Freida, despite being
pure of heart. Unfortunately though, their voices are dubbed. Blech.
Karnstein (great name) is played by Damien Rice (should have just went
with that name), with a lovely satanic flair thrown in for good
measure. He's a bit hammy and looks outright hilarious in his outfits,
but makes up for it by staging weird satanic rituals on a regular basis
in his giant castle. The dude is outspoken, cocky and never gives up.
He's easy to hate and makes for a great villain.
Anyway, if you're looking for plenty of weird, raunchy soft-core
vampire porn, you'll get a good fill here. On top of that, there's a
fair amount of gore and some really entertaining performances. The
movie regularly trips over its own plot from time to time, but that
doesn't hurt it much. Twins of Evil will sit happily amongst my Blu-Ray
Video / Audio
Video comes in 1.66:1 widescreen
as the order of the day, and looks fantastic. It's sharp,
colorful and vibrant. Great stuff for a classic like this.
Audio is presented in DTS-HD Master
Audio (with an optional music/effects track), and it impresses
every but as much as the video could. Great!
Hope you dig extras cause the big one here is The Flesh And The Fury: X-Posing Twins Of
Evil and it runs almost an hour and a half! It runs through the
source material the flick was adapted from, the raunchy direction
Hammer was heading in, and offers plenty of interviews with the cast
and crew, has location visits and all kinds of good stuff like that.
The Props That Hammer Built: The
Kinsey Collection is a 20 minute piece that deals with the props
that Wayne Kinsey has snagged over the years. I don't know a lot about
Hammer, but this guy seems to have grabbed some awesome stuff over the
years. Worth checking out.
There's also a still gallery,
one brief deleted scene and a
couple of trailers and TV spots for this flick (and one
brief combo trailer for Hands of the Ripper).
I had a great time watching this period piece. Sure, it's dramatic and
a bit draggy at times, but it's a ton of fun to watch. If this is some
of the better stuff Hammer has to offer, serve me up plenty. I'm down
to get into it with these Twins anytime.
