UPDATED: Summit Entertainment have confirmed this news ‘Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will direct Summit Entertainment’s re-imagination of the cult film HIGHLANDER co-financed by RCR Media Group. Production on the film is slated to begin spring of 2012’

It honestly pains me to write this, the planned HIGHLANDER remake has a new front-runner. Now it isn’t the front-runner part that pains me, it is the fact that one of my all time favourite films is getting remade.

So who is the front-runner? Wasn’t it Justin Lin? Well no, Justin Lin had to step aside for the sixth FAST AND THE FURIOUS film. Summit Entertainment’s choice for the director’s chair is now Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, best known for 28 WEEKS LATER.

The original film from Russell Mulcahy starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. It told the story of an immortal Connor MacLeod from the Scotland Highlands, who battles other immortals in order to claim the ‘Prize’. It spawned sequels, upon sequels and even a TV series. Nothing beats the original, it still holds up amazingly well 26 years later. There can be only one!

The remake has a new script written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, with an apparent touch up by Melissa Rosenberg (TWILIGHT). I do like Fresnadillo, he’s also had his name attached to THE CROW remake. No matter what I think the remake is coming, I’d rather have someone I trust like him on board than someone I don’t. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on this project as it develops.

Star of Fresnadillo’s 28 WEEKS LATER Rose Byrne, I’d welcome her in this remake!
