A24 is giving horror comedy Slice a one-night-only release

Slice Austin Vesely Paul Scheer

A24 has been taking a slow approach to bringing director Austin Vesely's horror comedy SLICE out into the world. Although star Chance "the Rapper" Bennett once said we could expect to see the movie in theatres in 2017, the only thing SLICE-related to be released that year was a teaser trailer that dropped last Halloween. Then A24 waited ten months before releasing the full trailer we first saw a couple weeks ago. Even then, SLICE didn't have an official release date... but now that a release date has been announced, it's for an extremely limited release.

SLICE will be making its world premiere at the ArcLight Chicago on Monday, September 10th. Yes, just five days from now. On that night, the movie will also be screening in 21 cities across the United States, a special one-night-only event.

These screenings will be taking place in Austin, Texas; Atlanta; Boston; Brooklyn; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami Beach; Milwaukee; Nashville, Tennessee; Philadelphia; Portland, Oregon; Raleigh, North Carolina; San Francisco; Seattle; St. Louis; and Washington, D.C.

It's disappointing that it's getting released in this way, because SLICE looks like fun to me. Set in an alternate reality where ghosts and werewolves are commonplace, the film stars Bennett, DEADPOOL 2's Zazie Beetz, Joe Keery of Stranger Things, Paul Scheer, Chris Parnell, Will Brill, and Rae Gray. The official synopsis:

In a spooky small town, when a slew of pizza delivery boys are slain on the job, two daring survivors (Atlanta's Zazie Beetz and Chance the Rapper in a wild film debut) set out to catch the culprits behind the cryptic crime spree.

Bennett plays

Dax Lycander, an ex-Chinese delivery food driver who also happens to be a werewolf. When a pizza delivery boy is murdered, the film's fictional city suspects Lycander of the crime because of his spotted past.

We'll have to wait and see what happens with SLICE after the premiere event. Maybe it will do well enough to earn a wider release, or maybe the next thing we'll hear about it will be details on a home video release.
