American Horror Story's Jessica Lange will be done after Season 4

Oct. 22, 2013by: Ryan Miller

This is a pretty big blow to FX's "American Horror Story" as well as its fans because without the presence of Jessica Lange, who has been the lead in every season so far, the show is going to miss a huge part of what makes it so damn good. Lange has been turning in some unforgettable performances on the show, and it's sad news hearing that she'll be bowing out after the fourth season. In short, what I'm trying to say is that this sucks balls, huge sweaty balls.

Jessica Lange is halfway into filming Season 3 of "American Horror Story" and though she’s relishing in her character Fiona Goode’s sleek stilettos, there is an end in sight. “I’ll do one more season,” she tells Buzzfeed. Just a couple of weeks ago, “American Horror Story” co-creator Ryan Murphy said, “Every year, she says, ‘OK, that’s my last one.’” But after Season 4, Lange will say goodbye to the series for good. “That’ll be it,” she tells the site. So there you have it folks, Lange will officially be done after the fourth season. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Over three hundred years have passed since the turbulent days of Salem and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe, who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona, the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

"American Horror Story: Coven" airs on Wednesdays at 10pm and stars, among many others, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Patti Lupone, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O'Hare, Josh Hamilton and Frances Conroy.

Extra Tidbit: Will you be sad to see Lange go?

Jessica Lange is one of my favorite actresses of all time. I have been a fan since King Kong and Frances. However, American Horror Story needs to avoid becoming stale over the seasons. And, changing cast is one way to do that.

I disagree. I think the repertory concept is brilliant and should be maintained. It really displays the versatility of what may be TV's finest cast (Really, when you've got Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone, how can you dispute it?).
The core idea of the show prevents it from becoming stale in and of itself...if one finds a season or story uninteresting, you merely tune back in the next year when it's refreshed.

-Sigh-
Knew it would happen sooner or later. Lange approached the series initially hesitant to devote so much time to TV, but each season they've lured her back. Apparently, she wants to retire in general, as sad as it is to hear.
But goddamn, the work Lange has been doing in "AHS" has been some of the best I've seen on TV in years. Particularly her work as Sister Jude in "Asylum", though this season's Fiona is giving her a run for her money, as "Coven" is an absolute blast so far.

It'll be hard to see her exit...realistically, the entire ensemble is wonderful, but it's Lange's show...it's been centered around her for its duration thus far, and I've loved her resurgence in popularity over the last few years.
I'm thrilled she'll do one more...I can only imagine the mammoth 'final' "AHS" role they'll create for her...
And, rumor has it, that Bates is interested in sticking around for a while...

Sucks

I wouldn't say she is the only reason to tune in but damn near close. I like all the players that weave in and out of these worlds that Ryan Murphy has created but Jessica Lange is the glue that holds it together. Without her it will be less watchable...unless Kathy Bates takes over the lead. Then I'm in.
