Andrea Riseborough & Olga Kurylenko cast in Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner “Oblivion”

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

After seeing his star dim in recent years, Tom Cruise went from white-dwarf (that’s just mean) to red-giant with the critically and financially successful MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. You know what that means…dude’s doubling down on hotties for his next action extravaganza.

Variety has it that Andrea Riseborough (right) and Olga Kurylenko (below) have been hired to join Joseph Kosinski’s untitled sci-fi epic, previously referred to as OBLIVION (as well as HORIZONS). Kurylenko will play Cruise’s lover and partner, who tethers him to the world above the clouds while he’s doing repair work. She becomes none-too-happy when she discovers he has fallen for the new woman, played by Riseborough.

The casting comes after an arduous search, particularly after Jessica Chastain was forced to bow out of the project a short time ago.

With Michael Arndt (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, TOY STORY 3) now doing script rewrites:

The untitled thriller centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.

Cruise will play the soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view.

OBLIVION, or whatever it ends up being called, comes out July 19, 2013.
