Though I like to consider myself a bad movie connoisseur, I have yet to brave the troubled waters of Jame Nguyen’s BIRDEMIC. The reason isn’t due to my usual laziness or apathy toward new films, but mostly because of the fact I heard so many interviews with the guy back when the first one was released and felt kind of sorry for him. This is exactly why many critics avoid any sort of interviews with director's before a movie is released-- as soon as you side with the filmmaker, it’s hard to honestly assess their film in an unbiased fashion. Especially if it’s something as awfully good as BIRDEMIC.
Now we finally have an official trailer for BIRDEMIC II: THE RESURRECTION, a sequel whose existence makes about as much sense as a TROLL II-2 (get it?). The clip has a lot of offputting wink-wink moments from the cast about what a bad movie they've made. Nguyen's direction here seems to miss the point of BIRDEMIC's success, as the reason bad movies are funny is because the filmmakers aren’t in on the joke. If they are, it kills the irony and the viewer’s experience is ruined.
Still, there is some unintentionally funny enjoyment to be had BIRDEMIC II’s trailer, particularly how goddamned long it takes to get to the bird action. This tells us there is probably still some bad movie life left in the franchise, which will make the sequel worth a watch for most. Keep watching the skies for bad CGI by checking out the trailer and and synopsis below.
In this sequel to cult favorite Birdemic: Shock and Terror, a flock of eagles and vultures wreak havoc amidst blossoming romance in Hollywood, California, leaving bloodshed and destruction wherever they hover. The story features original Birdemic survivors Rod and Nathalie, who are joined by new friends—struggling filmmaker Bill, aspiring actress Gloria, and several other Angelinos they encounter as they battle angry birds and a host of new enemies.
