Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day gets a PG-13 rating

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Back in June, we shared the first trailer for the upcoming teen-horror flick from Blumhouse cleverly called HAPPY DEATH DAY. While the trailer didn't blow my mind, I was reminded of one of my favorite 80's slashers HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME and so, against hope, I found myself with fingers crossed waiting to see the film score an R-rating.

Turns out this was not to be. Today we have the news that the film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for "Violence/terror, crude, sexual content, language, some drug material, and partial nudity."

Urgh. Not bad, but this totally seems to confirm that the film will be more like WISH UPON than the glorious HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. Which is a shame because the film sports (no pun intended) a killer premise, that while reminiscent of Harold Ramis' classic GROUNDHOG'S DAY, still sounded like fun.

Plus this fan poster I caught on the webs (see below) is ten-types of 80's slasher goodness.

In the end, I may still check out this film, but my interest has severely dropped with this new rating. Even if we get an UNRATED cut on Blu-ray, chances are it will include some light (CGI) blood added to a few windows here and there and that'll be that. Too bad.
