Bong Joon-Ho’s Snow Piercer acquired by Weinsteins; summer 2013 release coming?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Ah, now this is news that brings a smile to my ugly mug; Deadline.com is reporting that the Weinstein Company has acquired North American rights to Bong Joon-Ho and Park Chan-Wook’s sci-fi collaboration SNOW PIERCER. Evidently, the deal was upwards of seven figures, a nice sum for South Korean investor CJ Entertainment.

Even cooler, it appears possible that the Weinsteins will release the film wide in the summer of 2013. That isn’t confirmed, so don’t flip, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that all of North America will get to see THE HOST director’s first English language feature. (Naturally, we’ll all get a look at Park’s first foray here when STOKER comes out in the spring.)

Based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the movie is set in the not too distant future where a new Ice Age has wiped out most of the human race. With a revolt brewing onboard, the Snow Piercer is a train of Earth’s lone survivors that travels around the cold world.

The cast for SNOW PIERCER includes Chris Evans, Octavia Specer, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Kang Ho Song, Ewan Bremner and Ed Harris.
