Bride of Frankenstein coming out in 2019, Bardem confirmed as The Monster

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Earlier today, we let you guys know that Universal was moving ahead quickly on their planned DARK UNIVERSE series of classic monster movies. They released a logo and a pic of the current cast, including Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise among other top names (see that image below).

But this news may be cooler – or at least more interesting – than all of that star power combined. Turns out Universal also announced today that their follow-up film to this summer's THE MUMMY will be none other than a reboot of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN! Furthermore, Javier Bardem has been confirmed to play Frankenstein’s Monster, although whether or not he’s actually going to show up in BRIDE is unclear.

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, for those who live under rocks, is largely considered to be one of the best horror movies of all time. The film currently holds a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with the critic consensus reading: "An eccentric, campy, technically impressive, and frightening picture, James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein has aged remarkably well."

The new BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN has been set for Valentine's Day 2019 and has a confirmed director in Bill Condon. Condon is best known for directing the recent Emma Watson-starring BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, but he is known in these horror grounds, and shall forever be known, as the director of CANDYMAN 2: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH.

There have not been any casting announcements involving BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN yet (unless you count Bardem), but the lead role will be announced very soon. If you remember, a few months ago there was talk of Angelina Jolie taking on the role, and considering the other top names Universal is gathering for their monster mashes, it makes sense that it very well could still be Jolie as The Bride come Valentine's Day 2019.

Director Bill Condon on BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN:

I’m very excited to bring a new Bride of Frankenstein to life on screen, particularly since James Whale’s original creation is still so potent,” stated Condon.  “The Bride of Frankenstein remains the most iconic female monster in film history, and that’s a testament to Whale’s masterpiece—which endures as one of the greatest movies ever made.”

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) Synopsis:

After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.

We will let you know once we hear further news on Universal's BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN reboot. Until then, let us know what you think of this news on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN will be released on Thursday, February 14, 2019.

In a twist, THE MUMMY's Annabelle Wallis will become the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Called it.
