Bryan Singer and 20th Century Fox are teaming up to bring Robert A. Heinlein‘s classic sci-fi novel THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS to the big screen, according to Collider.

"Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim will adapt the novel for the project which is to be titled UPRISING. While it is unclear if Singer intends to direct the film, he is attached to produce alongside Lloyd Braun (Alphas", DIG) and Thor Halvorssen.

Heinlein’s 1966 novel...

...finds a lunar colony deciding that it really doesn’t want to be ruled by Earth and the political/military fallout that comes with the choice to revolt.

Heinlein was nominated for the Nebula award and took home the Hugo Award for best science fiction novel in 1967.

There have been two major attempts to adapt the book already. DreamWorks attempted to bring the novel to screen, with a script by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio. The other attempt came from Phoenix Pictures, who had HARRY POTTER producer David Heyman attached. Both adaptations ultimately failed, and the rights reverted back to Heinlein’s estate. 20th Century Fox is behind this latest effort after picking up the rights, and the studio will be hoping Singer has a little more success with this latest effort.

Heinlein, a celebrated science fiction writer, is best known as the author of STARSHIP TROOPERS, which was adapted by Paul Verhoeven in 1997 and has earned cult status over the last decade. Most recently, Michael and Peter Spierig took on Heinlein’s story “All You Zombies” earlier this year with the Ethan Hawke vehicle PREDESTINATION.
