Could Jurassic Park 4 now be a reboot? Sam Neill seems to think so

May. 21, 2013by: Kevin Woods

Earlier this month we heard that Universal's upcoming sequel JURASSIC PARK 4 was in trouble, later learning that the film had been put on indefinite hold with the official statement reading...

In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal's beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise's storied history.

That was disappointing news to fans of the franchise, but not completely unexpected seeing as how the studio had slated the fourth film for a June 2014 release and the window to get it shot, edited and ready for release by that date was closing quick. Now we have word that there may be more to the shake-up than we originally thought.

Sam Neill, who played Dr. Alan Grant in the original 1993 film, recently spoke with the Dominion Post about the forthcoming sequel and dropped this unexpected nugget:

“I’m told it’s a big reboot, a total re-jig.”

This is certainly strange news as Collider pointed out that producer Frank Marshall confirmed that the film was definitely a sequel and not a reboot or remake back in July of last year. Have the people in charge at Universal changed their minds, deciding that they'd prefer a reboot over a sequel? Could Neill be privy to some information that hasn't leaked out yet? There is always that possibility.

We'll keep you updated on news regarding JURASSIC PARK 4/JURASSIC PARK REMAKE/REBOOT as we hear it.

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see a JP sequel or a reboot/remake?

I don't care if it is a sequel or a reboot, as long as it is good.

I'd be more interested in a story about InGen and the creation Isla Nublar and Sorna, and introducing the dinosaurs to the park and the problems with that. I don't need another sequel of different people running (hopefully not in San Diego) from raptors, t-rexes, and whatever "bigger, badder" dinosaur they can one up with. They've tried that twice and they both were terrible.

Damn it Universal!! You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now [bangs on the table] you're selling it. You want to sell it. Well......guess whose butt won't be in the theatre.

Glad you appreciated it. I posted the same quote on movie news and I keep getting downvoted. Probably a bunch of 12 year olds that don't recognize that it's a quote from the movie.

A reboot would be great if they make it more like the book..and incorperated some really important plot devices from there

AGHH !

Why the heck are you possibly rebooting this franchise...you cant do that! This is a classic series well ok....maybe the first two were good, but just because you cant make a good solid choice to make a fourth one...now you want to reboot....ummm excuse me, but I thought REBOOTS were reserved for movies that ended up sucking so bad that after a few years it seemed alright to REBOOT (aka remake) and start fresh.
Jurassic Park is fine on its own...to reboot it you are simply killing the

Jurassic Park is fine on its own...to reboot it you are simply killing the franchise and giving it the respect it needs...because as we all know if you reboot it, you will make a sequel based on the reboot and further hurt the original .

Cue the CGI dinosaurs, pretty teenagers stuck on an island, and studio-tampered story in 3,2,1....

Anyone stop to think he could just be stating a reason why his character (or anyone from the original) won't be in it? It may just be a poor choice of words. This could simply be a similar type of play that worked for Evil Dead and by all accounts they are trying with Poltergeist where they can all exist in the same universe but don't cross paths. Yes I love the characters and personally would've loved Laura Dern to get a better shot of a return that she did in JP3 but I'm open to exploring

Yes I love the characters and personally would've loved Laura Dern to get a better shot of a return that she did in JP3 but I'm open to exploring new characters in a franchise like this. I love the franchise and unless they're going to roll out a straight to video low budget, poor CGI version (doubtful with Spielberg's interaction) I'll be there.
