David Lynch says he will never make another movie

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

I spent the last month power-watching David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS in an effort to be as up to date as possible once the third season began airing on Showtime this past Sunday. And, boy, am I glad I did. The new series may be damn-near unwatchable to those unfamiliar with all the twists, turns, and internal logic contained within TWIN PEAKS.

That said, when it comes to David Lynch, I still believe that his 2001 horror-ish thriller MULHOLLAND DRIVE is his masterpiece. ERASERHEAD and BLUE VELVET will go down as total masterpieces as well, but personally, MULHOLLAND DRIVE stands above the rest.

It is with this in mind I bring you the sad news that it seems Lynch is done making feature films. His last flick was INLAND EMPIRE way back in 2006 and it was five years before that we saw his previous film the above-mentioned MULLHOLAND DRIVE.

In a recent interview with The Sydney Herald, Lynch talked about the current state of movies and if he would ever consider returning to film. Here is what he had to say on the matter.

David Lynch on the current state of movies:

Things changed a lot. So many films were not doing well at the box office even though they might have been great films and the things that were doing well at the box office weren't the things that I would want to do.

Lynch was then asked if this statement is confirmation he has made his last film:

Yes, it is.

And so I guess that is that on David Lych making more feature films. However, this doesn't mean that he won't return to TV. Also, there is always the chance that Lynch will return to movies eventually, but that he is just currently unenchanted by them. I guess we'll see.

Whatever ends up happening with Lynch's theatrical/cinema career from here on out, I highly suggest you check out his new TWIN PEAKS revival on Showtime. It is pure Lynch in all the best ways possible. Personally, I love the new season and I'm sure you will too.

How do you feel about David Lynch calling it quits from directing features? Also, what is your favorite Lynch film? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!
