Diablo Cody talks Zombie Love & the failure of Jennifer’s Body

Last Updated on July 26, 2021

Diablo Cody is pretty much a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. Some love her quirky brand of snarky, quip-heavy material, others gag at her hipper-than-thou attitude. You can put me in the latter camp for the most part, although I can’t claim to think about her often enough to give a damn either way.

One thing is for sure, she’s not going anywhere. She’s got an Oscar, a t.v. show (“The United States of Tara” on Showtime) and a handful of writing and producing gigs. One such gig is BREATHERS: A ZOMBIE’S LAMENT – Cody gave iF Magazine an update on its progress: “We have a script and I am thrilled with it and hope we can go into production with it soon. It’s a zombie love story. Zombies are so hot now, but I like to think it’s about the personal side of being a zombie and being ostracized.”

Zombies are so hot now. You heard it here first.

As for JENNIFER’S BODY, which was heavily hyped but bombed disastrously ($18 million worldwide; even with a modest budget that’s a flop), Cody blames its failure on Fox’s marketing, but sees a future for the goofy flick: “The marketing was a little messed up… It was marketed mostly to boys and I think we could have had a large female audience that was ignored. I have faith. I’m on Twitter and I get a lot of feedback from people all day. The DVD came out and I’ve heard from an avalanche of people saying ‘I didn’t think I would like this movie, and I’ve watched the DVD five times.’ Now I’m thinking, you missed it the first time around and you’re getting your opportunity to enjoy it.”

I believe the main problem with JENNIFER’S BODY was that no one likes Megan Fox. Yes, she’s hot, but she can’t act. Us dudes can gawk at her on the web – we ain’t paying $12 to see her struggle with her dialogue. Girls simply don’t want anything to do with her. Horror does some of its strongest business as a “date night” activity – this was not a date night movie for either sex. (That said, I still thought it was enjoyable enough, at least for a Saturday afternoon matinee.)
