Director Stacy Title’s awesome advice to young female horror directors

Director Stacy Title is perhaps best known for helming the horror anthology HOOD OF HORROR, starring Snoop Dogg. More recently however she returned to the director's chair to helm the "new boogeyman" flick THE BYE BYE MAN, which was just released unrated on Blu-ray.

Title stopped by to chat with Broke Horror Fan about the new cut of THE BYE BYE MAN and ended up having a great interview which spanned such topics as working with Carrie-Anne Moss and Doug Jones, to her feelings about the critical response to THE BYE BYE MAN.

However, possibly the most interesting moment of the interview is when she was asked if she had any advice for young women wanting to become directors. Here is what she had to offer.

These days, you don’t really need a crew to make movies; you can use your phone. I would really suggest to keep making as many things as you can, then you have a real, something to show. If no one will hire you, hire yourself. That’s how you can get other people to hire you, because you don’t need them to work, and they see that confidence. Now that you can really put stuff together, even just shorts, there’s a great market. It’s very exciting to do small work, in particular horror. The audience for horror is more women, so I think there’s going to be a lot of women coming up who are going to get more opportunities as people start to figure that out.

I have always said there should be more female horror directors (I know, I'm so PC) but really, I worked at Blockbuster for years, and the most rabid, enthusiastic horror fans I saw on the regular were teenage girls. Those chicks dig some f*cking horror movies! 

What happens to that love and enthusiasm? As a white male, I guess it's not my place to speculate. But all the same, in my experience, girls can (and will) tell you what scares them. And why. They have a handle on their own fears. On the other hand, guys love to act like nothing scares them. So let me ask you, why is it mostly dudes who are the ones making flicks that are supposed to be scary???

I'm going to step off my soapbox now. I can only hope some of you take Stacy Title's advice to heart and implement it.
