Dredd kicks ass in the home video market; is a sequel still possible?

Jan. 23, 2013by: Eric Walkuski

For all of us who wondered WTF?! when DREDD flopped badly during its theatrical run - not just here in North America, but across the globe - take heed: the kickass lawman is not down for the count. Having debuted on Blu-ray and DVD last week, DREDD shot up the sales chart and tied for #1 with Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE. It was also the top film download for the week, outpacing all other titles in digital sales.

This is indeed good news for the Judge, who might as well have not gotten out of bed for his latest journey to the big screen. It was a dire opening for DREDD, as the Lionsgate release only raked in $6 million, on its way to a truly woeful $13 million domestic run. It only made $32 million worldwide, and considering it cost upward of $50 million to produce, that was a very poor showing indeed.

But with 650,000 units sold on the home video market, DREDD is the best-selling new release title of the year. Obviously, Lionsgate was eager to tout the victory:

"DREDD's chart topping performance demonstrates the breadth of the home entertainment audience for this exciting, high caliber film as well as underscoring our ability to monetize theatrical titles across all home entertainment platforms through the highest packaged, VOD and digital conversion rates in the industry," said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate Executive Vice President & General Manager, Home Entertainment. "We're also pleased that a film released on 3-D Blu-ray was able to top the sales charts, a clear reflection of how quality films in this up and coming format can find their audience."

So does this change the fortunes of a DREDD sequel, the possibility of which seemed a ridiculous notion up until this past week? Unfortunately, Lionsgate hasn't mentioned anything of the sort just yet; it remains to be seen how long the Pete Travis film can hang around the sales chart. And while DREDD 2 may still be a long shot, it's heartening to see the audience for violent R-rated action films hasn't disappeared - they're evidently sitting at home.

I guess THE LAST STAND has something to look forward to.

Excellent!

I loved this movie in 3D when it hit theaters. I've watched the blu ray 4 times since I've bought it. I hope a sequel will be released.

Excellent news

Until you realise this will most likely be direct to DVD and not theatrical. I truly hope they make one and it is theatrical though. I was genuinly pleasantly surprised by this movie. DtDVD have been ok to enjoyable at best but never really rocked (from what I've caught anyway). This deserves a theatrical release. I don't know why these movies have been failing, if it is down to marketing they really need to get their ass in gear.

Loved Dredd. My favorite action movie in a long, long time. Years. I really hope a sequel will happen. Its flop was such an injustice.

Rwooorf?

I watched and loved Dredd. I even forked the extra cash for 3D. I was nevertheless bummed when I saw the empty movie theater on opening weekend and lamented that it flopped and there would not be any more Dredd on the big screen.

Seeing these rumors is heartening, but I submit to the discussion the proposition that Lionsgate might follow the example of Death Race and release the sequels direct to DVD/BluRay as it has proven to be the profitable medium for Dredd. The question is whether or

The question is whether or not they'll keep the same cast. The Death Race sequels used lesser stars and while Dredd always kept his helmet on, another actor might not channel Dredd properly... see Sylvester Stallone.

I bought my blu-ray copy the week it came out. For me, it was one of my top 5 movies of last year.

Dredd was a really fun movie. I could easily see a sequel that would free Dredd from the confines of the Peach Trees and let him loose upon Mega City. I'd really like to see a sequel that expands on not only his story, but the city itself as well.

I just hope they do a sequel that will do it justice, rather than a straight-to-video cheapie with a re-cast Dredd. This movie was a lot of fun and I've been recommending it to as many people as possible.

I borrowed the DVD from my dad (I love that as a 65 year old man he loves stuff like this). I will certainly be buying myself a copy soon enough.

I'm buying it soon and doing a Dredd/The Raid double feature.

Bring on a sequel!

Please let there be a sequel!

I've bought a Blu-Ray copy and I've played the movie for 3 people who've themselves bought a copy immediately afterward. If RIDDICK can do it, so can DREDD.

Wow! I'm glad Dredd is doing very well in home video market. I bought Dredd Blu Ray and it looks and sounds fantastic (I only watch 2D version. Can't comment on 3D). Should Dredd be back on the big screen again, I hope Karl Urban reprises his role as Dredd.
