HOSTEL PART II -October 23rd

If you don’t buy or rent this movie, I think Eli Roth might throw another hissy-fit and quit the film industry altogether. I’m not joking. So you have yourself a decision to make: If ya wanna see what else Roth here has up his sleeve, pre-order like 16 copies of this un’ and hand em’ out to your buddies; if you’re sick of Roth on about every level, steer far, far away from this bomb of a sequel. But be wary: if it bombs on home video, you can expect another MySpace rant, and I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

The Goods:

  • An Eli Roth commentary
  • Second commentary with Gabriel Roth and Quentin Tarantino
  • Third commentary with Eli Roth, Lauren German, Richard Burgi and Vera Jordanova.
  • “Hostel Part II: The Next Level” behind the scenes featurette
  • “The Art of KNB Effects” featurette
  • Featurette on set design
  • International Television Special
  • Blood and Guts montage
  • Deleted scenes
  • Elvis Mitchell of “The Treatment” Interview with Eli Roth
  • Factory Torture Cams

    HOSTEL: ORIGINAL DIRECTOR’S CUT - October 23rd

My immediate thought was WHY? Is there really a need for a director’s cut? For more commentaries? For another ending? For everyone who bought the original ‘sicker and more twisted unrated version’ to dip back into their wallets and fork over more dough? Methinks not. Nuff said.

    The Goods:

  • Commentary with director Eli Roth
  • Second commentary with Roth, Tarantino, Boaz Yakin and Scott Spiegel
  • Third commentary with Roth, actors Barbara Nedeljakova and Eythor Gudjonsson, editor George Folsey, Jr. and journalist Harry Knowles
  • Fourth commentary with Roth, producer Chris Biggs and documentarian Gabriel Roth
  • Five new featurettes (Music and Sound, Set Design, KNB Effects, An Icelandic Meal with Actor Eythor Gudjonsson, and Takashi Miike Interview)
  • “Hostel Dismembered” International TV special
  • KCRW radio interview with Roth by Elvis Mitchell
  • “Kill The Car” multi-angle featurette
  • Three part behind-the-scenes featurette
  • Ten deleted scenes
  • Four photo galleries
  • Original Ending
  • Option to choose between the theatrical or director's cut endings

    BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA: COLLECTOR’S EDITION - October 2nd

Gary Oldman owned being Dracula, and I might go so far as saying he pimped the role as good as the great Bela Lugosi ever did, if not better. Throw in some Keanu Reeves action, pre-shoplifting Wynona Ryder, and Anthony Hopkins knack for beheading a threesome of hotties, and you have yourself one Collector’s Edition that may actually be worth buying. One question: why the weak ass cover art? Seriously, what’s up this thing?

    The Goods:

    • Francis Ford Coppola Video Intro
    • Director’s Audio Commentary
    • The Blood is the Life – The Making of Dracula
    • The Costumes Are the Sets – The Design of Eiko Ishioka
    • In-Camera – The Naïve Visual Effects of Dracula
    • Method and Madness – Visualizing Dracula
    • Deleted Scenes
    • Trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s new theatrical film Youth Without Youth

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE -October 9th

This is one cracked out cover. Seriously, just starring into that eye, or thinking about what would happen if I looked out the window the next time I flew somewhere and saw this- yup, I’d pretty much just die of a heart attack. That, or I’d probably rethink my flying ritual of eating a bunch of shrooms about 40 minutes before take-off. Yeah, bad idea if this is the result. So while this release has dick when it comes to special features, it makes it up in the hallucinatory cover art that’s bound to inspire more tripping out and acid flashbacks for years to come.

    The Goods:

  • 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo Surround tracks

    DEATH PROOF -September 18th

Loved the movie, love the cover, love that it’s a 2 disc extended edition, but I f*cking hate that they’re releasing the GRINDHOUSE movies separately. The special features here could also be called ‘I’m Quentin Tarantino and I’m hot shit- lemme tell you why’, but I’ll let that go cause I enjoyed the flick and I’m curious to see what the extra 30 minutes are that were added back into the movie to make it a full two hours. Sure, the ‘missing reel’ is back, but could that lap dance really be a half hour long…? P.S., Kurt Russell's a pimp.

    The Goods:

  • Never-before-seen footage including the “missing reel” (containing Vanessa Ferlito’s unseen lap-dance sequence)
  • Black-and-white segment in the film’s second act
  • Finding Quentin’s Gals featurette
  • The Guys of Death Proof featurette
  • Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike featurette
  • Introducing Zoe Bell featurette
  • Quentin’s Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke featurette
  • The trailer for Double Dare
  • An International poster gallery

    Honorable Mentions:

PLANET TERROR –October 16th - Because it’s the second half of the most underrated movie experience of 2007!

THE HAUNTING OF #24 –September 11th – Because it’s basically a knockoff of 1408… only straight to video. .

THE RETURN TO HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL –October 16th – Because this time around you choose the fate of characters on the screen. Cool concept, lets hope they can pull it off.

That's all for this week! Stay tuned every week for your latest DVD news, and as always, feel free to shoot me an email (ammongilbert@joblo.com ) for any & all DVD news, scoops, and easter eggs!

quoted from Twitch writer Peter Martin-"...but it should be noted that Hogan had nothing to do either with the crappy new title or the horrid artwork, which obviously is meant to capitalize on the recent success of the recent Stephen King adaptation #1408. Hogan’s film was completed two years ago and has no connection with #1408—and the description as an “urban” ghost story is a bit misleading since the film is more rural in tone than urban."

Actually, THE HAUNTING OF #24 (aka Lie Still) was made in 2005. So it didn't really knock off 1408.
