DVD BUZZ-SAW #124

09.28.2007by: Ammon Gilbert

DEATH BY ENGAGEMENT -October 2nd

So you've been dating your girlfriend for like 8 years, and all she wants you to do is to grow a pair of balls, propose to her and commit already, and all you want to do is run away to the nearest strip joint and blow your last paycheck on lap dances and watered down drinks. To keep her off your tail for a little while longer, pick this beast up, as it's about a cursed ring that bounces through an ensemble of desperate-to-be married young women, bringing brutal deaths to all who wear it. When the credits roll, she'll be begging you not to propose!

The Goods:

  • Anamorphic Widescreen
  • Dolby Digital 5.1 & 2.0 Surround tracks
  • 45 Minutes of Behind-the-scenes Footage

NOSFERATU – THE ULTIMATE 2 DISC EDITION - November 20th

Arguably the first horror film ever made, NOSFERATU is hitting the DVD universe with a 2 disc set that's sure to excite even it's biggest fans. I watched a library copy of this once, and let me tell you: it is scary. Not in the way we know now, but somehow it's far creepier and all around more bizarre than anything I've seen since. Considering it's still shocking folks, it's easy to say that NOSFERATU is the ultimate horror classic.

    The Goods:

  • 2 x DVD special edition of the 2007 F.W. Murnau-Stiftung restoration with the original score.
  • Full-length audio commentary by Brad Stevens and R. Dixon Smith
  • A 96-page book containing articles by David Skal (author of Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Novel to Stage to Screen); Thomas Elsaesser (author of Weimar Cinema and After: Germany's Historical Imaginary); Gilberto Perez (author of The Material Ghost: Films and Their Medium); Enno Patalas (former director of the Münchner Stadtmuseum/Filmmuseum, where he was responsible for the restoration of many German classics, including Nosferatu); a newly translated archival piece on vampires by the film's producer Albin Grau; notes on the film's restoration; and archival imagery.
  • 53-minute German documentary about Murnau and the making of NOSFERATU complete with fascinating footage of the film's locations today.
  • Restoration demonstration
  • More extras to be announced

I KNOW WHO KILLED ME - November 27th

For a stripper, Lindsay Lohan is sure wearing a lot of clothes in this flick. Not that I've seen this piece of crap, but as she doesn't get fully nude, that's wearing too much (cause she's a stripper, see?). I guess the one thing that may break you down and pick this f*cker up is the extended dance sequence, which is really the only reason why I would watch this damn movie in the first place. But then again, as she doesn't show off her ta-ta's, what's the point? Oh yeah... there is none.

    The Goods:

  • Anamorphic widescreen
  • Full screen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1
  • Extended dance sequence
  • Alternate opening
  • Alternate ending
  • Blooper reel

MOH: DREAM CRUISE - November 13th

From Norio Tsuruta, director of RINGU O comes this latest installment of the MASTERS OF HORROR series, now in full effect with it's second season hitting DVD. Never saw this episode, but if it's on a cruise ship, that's scary enough. I mean, if there's a psycho like this guy on board, where can you go? You're on a boat! Given, it's the size of a small village in Ireland, but still... you're stuck! If it's anything like RINGU O, I think we'll be pleasantly surprised with this entry. Anyone out there seen it?

    The Goods:

  • 1.78:1 anamorphic transfer
  • Dolby Digital 5.1
  • Audio commentary with actor Daniel Gillies and producer Mick Garris
  • "The Making of Dream Cruise" Featurette
  • Photo gallery

    DVD Covers:

    Honorable Mentions:

IN THE SPIDER’S WEB –November 6th - Because giant spiders and Lance Henriksen spells absolute terror in my book!

DRACULUA: 4 FILM FAVORITES –November 6th – Because a quad of classically ‘bad’ Dracula movies (for one low price) sounds like a barrel of laughs and then some.

CREATURE FROM THE HILLBILLY LAGOON –November 13th – Because taking shots at rednecks (and in this case, deadnecks) never gets old!

That's all for this week! Stay tuned every week for your latest DVD news, and as always, feel free to shoot me an email (ammongilbert@joblo.com ) for any & all DVD news, scoops, and easter eggs!
