DVD BUZZ-SAW #156

May. 9, 2008by: Ammon Gilbert

DOOMSDAY - July 29th

Director Neil Marshall can do no wrong in my book, so color me stoked that the latest flick in his D series (alongside DOG SOLDIERS and THE DESCENT) is about as high up on my list as it gets. I'm a bastard for missing it in theaters, but as this has both the Rated and Unrated cuts of the film (about 5 extra minutes worth), dare I say it was better to wait and check it on DVD? Though a two story Rhona Mitra would have been pretty cool, the theater lacks that ever important 'pause' button and 'slow motion' feature...

The Goods:

  • 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
  • Commentary with Director Neil Marshall and Cast Members Sean Pertwee, Darren Morfitt, Rick Warden and Les Simpson
  • Anatomy of Catastrophe: Civilization on the Brink featurette
  • The Visual Effects and Wizardry of Doomsday featurette
  • Devices of Death: Guns, Gadgets and Vehicles of Destruction featurette

SIMON, KING OF THE WITCHES - June 24th

This is the first time EVER that this title has been available to own on home video. No copies of VHS or Laserdisc exist (though I'm sure there's a bootleg or two out there). It was released over 30 years ago and yet there's still demand by those who saw it for it make its DVD debut. Hooray! Truth be told, I've never heard of this flick, but there must be a cult following--at least, a following big enough to merit a DVD release, right? Right??? Right. Gritty, smutty, psychedelic devil worshiping horror from the 70s... gotta love it.

    The Goods:

  • 16X9 anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
  • Two never-before-seen bonus featurettes with Andrew Prine (Chisum, Gettysburg) and noted cult director Bruce Kessler

    HYBRID - July 8th

Yet another installment of 'The Maneater Series,' this one features a wolf and a man... a wolf man, perchance? Certainly alludes to the werewolf variety here, though I can't tell which one's bloodier--the man, or the wolf. So who's the maneater here? Watch out boys, she'll chew you up, whoa-whoa here she comes... she's a maneater! Hale and Oats... thank God we're not in the 80s any longer.

    The Goods:

  • Anamorphic widescreen
  • English Dolby Digital 5.1
  • More TBA

BONE EATER –July 8th – Because it takes a bonafide badass to actually eat bones.

THE BEACH PARTY AT THE THRESHOLD OF HELL – July 15th - Because those National Lampoon guys know how to party... but do they know how to turn on the horror? We shall see...

That Funny Games art is kind of bad, I was hoping they would go with one of the two theatrical posters.

I agree, looks a bit too comedic, I think (a golf club?).
